If you're looking for an Australian IBAN, find the quick, and authentic alternatives in this article.
Whether you are a world traveller, an expat, or just a regular tourist, you’ve probably heard of the Wise Account, a multi-currency account that allows you to manage different currencies. But apart from the account, you can also use the Wise card to pay for things in Ireland and abroad.
In this article, we delve deeper into the versatility of Wise and show you how you can use it to manage your daily finances in Ireland and abroad. From seamless in-store payments with a debit card, or even your phone or watch, to quick and easy payments during your online shopping spree, Wise gives you options for all occasions.
You may know Wise as an online account where you can manage your money when you are travelling. But how exactly can you pay with Wise in Ireland? Can you use Wise in Ireland for your daily purchases and for buying your clothes or gifts in physical or online shops? We have good news for you, because yes, you absolutely can!
But before you can pay with Wise, you must first have a Wise Account. Fortunately, this is a simple process that can be completed entirely online via the website or app. You don't have to go to an office for it.
After successfully opening your account, you can order your Wise debit card, both physical and virtual version.
You can order the physical Wise card for a one-time fee of €7. The digital card is free and you can use it immediately (no need to wait for your physical to arrive at home).
After topping up your account, you can pay with your Wise card anywhere in Ireland that accepts a Visa card, both in stores (shops, restaurants, hotels, grocery stores) or online.

Paying with your Wise card in shops, restaurants, and online is simple. In Ireland (and abroad), you can use the Wise debit card in two simple ways:
Card insertion: At physical payment terminals, you can simply insert your Wise card into the machine and enter your PIN code.
Contactless payment: For quick and easy payments, you can use the contactless option. All you have to do is hold your Wise debit card close to the card reader to complete your purchase. This is useful for small transactions, for example, and makes paying in busy environments much faster and simpler, as you can tap and pay.
| Moreover, you don't have to worry if you forget your PIN code. With the Wise app, you always have access to your PIN, so you can check it if needed. |

Are you standing at a busy checkout with your hands full of bags and an overstuffed wallet? Then it is super convenient if you only need to wave your watch or phone past the payment terminal to pay for your groceries.
With the Wise card or the digital card option in the mobile wallet (like Apple Pay or Google Pay), you can effortlessly pay with your smartphone, smartwatch, and other smart devices.

Wise makes paying simple and convenient. The digital card integration makes it possible to carry out secure and fast transactions, wherever you are.
Shopping on your favourite websites is also possible with your Wise card and is just as easy as paying in a physical shop. And as we mentioned, you can create and use your digital card for making online payments, also in more than 40 currencies.

The digital card has a different card number than your physical card, and can be easily freezed or deleted after online purchases, which provides extra security.
For an online card payment, you may go through the 3D Secure process (a technical standard that adds an extra layer of security to online card transactions), where you must confirm that you are the card owner by verifying the transaction via the app or by receiving an SMS.
3DS is only applied when the seller requests it. It is therefore not required for every online transaction. If it is requested, you must complete the verification to finish the transaction. If it is not requested, the payment will be processed without additional verification.
Below you will find a table with the costs for using the Wise card:
| Service | Fees |
|---|---|
| Ordering the Wise card | Physical card: €7 (one-time) Virtual card: €0 |
| Paying | Free if you have the currency in your account (you can manage 40+ currencies) For currency conversion: starting from 0.61%, depending on the currencies |
| Withdrawing cash | Free* for up to 2 withdrawals up to €200 per month. After the limit, 1.75% + €0.50 per withdrawal |
| Exchange rate | Mid-market exchange rate (the same you usually see on Google) |
* Wise will not charge you for these withdrawals, but some additional charges may occur from independent ATM networks.
There are limits on the Wise card that you should be aware of. All personal cardholders have daily and monthly account spending limits, which is the amount that can be spent by card and withdrawn from ATMs across all cards on your account.
For both limits, you have:
- a monthly limit, which refreshes on the first day of the month
- a daily limit, which refreshes each day at midnight
In Ireland the maximum monthly spending limit is 80,000 euros. And you can withdraw a maximum of 4000 euros from the ATM monthly.
You can always check and adjust your limit in the app or on the website.
A friend's birthday abroad? Helping your sister who lost her debit card while backpacking? With Wise, you can send money abroad from a currency you already have in your account, which can save you on exchange rate costs.
Regarding costs, it is good to know that sending money between Wise accounts is free and instant, unless currency exchange is involved. For example, if you send Euros to another Euro-account, it is free. If you send money to an external account, the costs may vary depending on the currencies involved.
Wise is a good choice for payments, both at home and abroad. Not only because it all works conveniently, but also because all currency exchanges are calculated using the mid-market rate that you usually find on Google.
Whether you are shopping online, paying in stores, sending money abroad, or simply managing your finances, Wise makes everything easy and reliable.
