How does Remitly work in Ireland?
Ready to move your money, but curious about Remitly? We break down the 'how-to' for their international transfers, simply and quickly.
Western Union¹ is a popular service for sending and receiving payments internationally. You can arrange transfers digitally and in person, and get payments in cash or to your bank account. But what about if you’re travelling? Are there Western Union agents at Dublin Airport if you need to collect cash or send money to someone else?
This guide covers how to find Western Union Dublin locations, and the services you can choose from at the airport. Plus we’ll introduce the Wise Account as a good way to send and receive low cost transfers with the mid-market exchange rate.
If you’re passing through Dublin Airport on a trip you might need to exchange currencies or send money overseas. Unfortunately, there’s no Western Union at Dublin Airport - but there are alternatives, such as:
Exchange office
Currency exchange at Dublin Airport is managed by ICE (International Currency Exchange) and allows you to convert euros to the currency you need for your trip.
Multicurrency accounts
If you don’t want to worry about going physically to a place to exchange currencies, you can use a multicurrency account, such as the Wise Account, that allows you to convert between +40 currencies in one account.

Currency exchange options at Dublin Airport are managed by ICE.² There are physical ICE locations in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
You can exchange your cash in T1 landside in arrivals or departures, and through security in the departures area too.
In T2 your options include desks at the check in area, in the baggage hall for new arrivals, and in the airside departures lounge.
ICE services include options to make a spot exchange, or to order your currency in advance using the click and collect service. More than 50 currencies are available, although ICE recommends using click and collect with at least 24 hours notice, or 48 hours for exotic currencies, to ensure the stock you need is available.
There are plenty of locations for Western Union in Dublin before you reach the airport, or after arrival if you’re heading into Ireland for a trip.
Popular Western Union agents in Dublin include the Dublin GPO on O'Connell Street, and many other An Post locations³ (post offices) throughout the city.
There are also Western Union agents in many independent stores which you can spot by looking out for the Western Union logo as you’re out and about.
The easiest way to find Western Union locations near you, or to plan a payment collection, is to use either the Western Union location finder⁴ or the An Post location finder⁵ if you’d rather transact in a post office specifically.
Both options are available digitally, so you can filter and search based on your location and the specific services you need.
💡 Bear in mind that the fees and rates you get for Western Union services can vary depending on the location and channel you use, so you might find different charging structures are available depending on where you are.

When you send a payment with Western Union you may pay a couple of fees - a transfer fee, which is usually easy to see and understand, and an exchange rate markup.
⚠️ The markup is a hidden fee. It’s a percentage added to the mid-market rate to create the 'retail' rate you are charged when converting your money into your recipient’s local currency.
Western Union has a statement on their website which confirms that they make money from currency conversion¹ - and this markup is usually where providers like Western Union cover their costs and revenue. This type of fee is very common - but it can be harder to spot, and can push up your overall costs significantly.
Exchange rate markups vary - so to see whether one applies on your Western Union payment you’d need to compare the rate you’re quoted against the mid-market rate for your currency pair. If there’s a difference this probably means that a markup has been added to the rate offered by Western Union.
Not all providers take this approach to currency conversion. Wise for example uses the mid-market rate for all currency conversions and shows the fees clearly for transparency.
