This guide walks through all you need to know, plus we’ll introduce Wise as an option for sending and managing your money in different currencies.

Western Union is a global giant in international money transfers, and has been in operation for well over 150 years.
Western Union Ireland offers ways to send and receive payments in person and through their website or app. You can send money from Ireland to 200 countries and territories, and pay with card or bank transfer if you arrange a digital payment - or in cash if you go to an agent location.
Western Union stands out among money transfer services because of its huge global agent network. This allows your recipient to get their money in cash at an agent local to them, which is ideal if you’re in a hurry or sending to someone without access to a bank account.
However, Western Union does also have a couple of limitations compared to some other money transfer services. For example, Western Union doesn’t have an account you can use to hold or receive foreign currency payments, like the one you can get from Wise.
There’s also no Western Union equivalent of the Wise card, a multi-currency debit card for spending and withdrawing money in 150+ countries.
You can send money with Western Union Ireland in the following ways:
- Send money online through the Western Union website (pay by card or bank transfer)
- Send money using the Western Union app (pay by card or bank transfer)
- Send money in person at an agent location (pay in cash)
- Start your transfer online or in-app, and complete at an agent location (pay in cash).

When you arrange a transfer with Western Union you’ll be shown the exchange rate which applies based on the country and currency you’re sending to. If you set up your payment digitally, you can see the rate and fees before you confirm your transfer, and in an agent location, the agent can talk you through the rate that’s available.
It’s important to know that Western Union makes money from currency exchange.² This is something common for money transfer services, and it’s stated upfront on their website. However, it’s not always obvious what that means.
Generally when a money transfer service makes money from currency exchange, the rates they use to convert your money include a fee. This may be called a markup, margin or spread. It’s a percentage cost added onto the mid-market exchange rate, which is the rate you’ll normally see on Google, and the rate the provider will have been given when they bought the currency in the first place.
To see if a markup has been included in your Western Union exchange rate you’ll need to compare the rate you’re quoted against the mid-market rate for your currency pair.
Not all providers use a marked up exchange rate. Some, like Wise, for example, offer the mid-market rate directly with no added fee on the currency conversion, and split out all the fees you pay separately to make it easier to check and compare.
You can receive money with Western Union in Ireland in several ways, and the exact options available to you may depend on the nature of the transfer, but can include:
- Receive your money to your bank account directly in EUR
- Collect your money as cash in EUR at an agent location
- Get paid to the bank card that’s linked to your bank account
- Receive money to a mobile wallet - this service depends on compatibility of both your phone network and the sender’s network, and may not be available to all customers.
However, note: It’s only possible to receive payments with Western Union in euros. This means that if someone is sending you money from abroad, their home currency payment will be converted to EUR before you receive the money.
If it’s more convenient for you to receive money in the sender’s home currency, you may prefer checking another option, such as the Wise Account.
Wise options to receive money include getting access to local account details in 8+ currencies, that allow your sender to make a local transfer in their home currency.
So if someone wants to send you GBP or USD for example, you can receive these currencies to your Wise account. You’ll be able to hold, send, spend or convert the money back to EUR when you’re ready.
If you’re sending your payment online or in app, Western Union fees for money transfers vary depending on:
You’ll see a quote for the fee and exchange rate when you arrange your transfer, and can also select different payment and receive methods to see how the overall costs change. Bear in mind fees can also be included in the exchange rate, so it’s worth comparing this at the same time.
Transfers arranged through an agent may have a different fee structure. For example, there are many Western Union locations in An Post branches. Here you pay a flat transfer fee depending on the value of the transfer, starting at 7.5 EUR if you’re sending 35 EUR or less.³ A fee may also be added to the exchange rate you’re quoted to convert your euros to the currency needed for deposit.
Western Union has hundreds of locations in Ireland, including standalone agents and An Post branches.⁴
The easiest way to find a convenient branch to transact is to use the Western Union location finder⁵ over on the website, which has interactive tools to search and filter depending on where you are and the specific service you need.
