How does Remitly work in Ireland?
Ready to move your money, but curious about Remitly? We break down the 'how-to' for their international transfers, simply and quickly.
US citizens and residents can use Zelle¹ to make USD payments between bank accounts with just a phone number or email address. This means there’s no need to share your full bank details when you split a bill with friends or need to receive a payment from someone. But does Zelle work in Ireland?
If you’re an Irish resident you might be wondering how to use Zelle here - or if you’re a US resident visiting the Emerald Isle maybe you’re trying to get Zelle overseas during your trip. This guide covers what you need to know - plus we introduce the Wise Account as a way to send and receive payments in EUR, USD, GBP and more.
Zelle is a person to person payment provider which lets you make transfers between US bank accounts, often with no fee.
Zelle is intended primarily for sending money to people you know and trust as transfers can’t be reversed once made, and works for US dollar payments only.
No. Zelle is not available in Ireland and can not be used with an Irish bank account. To use Zelle both the sender and the recipient must have US bank accounts.²
Keep an eye on updates on Zelle available countries as the service may be rolled out to other regions over time.
So, Zelle in Ireland isn’t an option. But what about if I have a US bank account? Can Zelle send money internationally from the US to an Irish bank, for example?
Unfortunately, you can’t use Zelle to send money overseas, as payments can only move from one US bank account to another.
This means that if you’re in the US and need to send money to a friend in Ireland you need an alternative, like Wise, for example, that allows you to send money to +140 countries.
If you have a US bank account the chances are that you’ll be able to use Zelle. While the requirements for Zelle access do vary between banks, Zelle is built into the online and mobile banking services of a huge number of US banks. You can check if your bank is one of them, and then register with Zelle.³
Once you’re registered you should still be able to access Zelle when you’re on a trip to Ireland as long as your bank allows overseas access to their online and mobile banking services.

If you’re looking for a different provider to make transfers and also manage your money, have a look at the Wise Account.

No. You can not send money with Zelle overseas, as all Zelle payments are intended to move money between US banks only.
Zelle is a US based service and payments can only be sent and received between US based banks. Zelle is not available in Ireland.
There’s not a single European equivalent to Zelle, but the SEPA Instant payment system is a similarly fast and easy way to send a EUR payment from Ireland. Not all banks allow you to send using a phone number alias, as is the case with Zelle, but this service is available from some account providers.
There are ways for you to send money from Ireland to the US, to be deposited to a US bank, or, with some providers, collected as cash.
Your own bank is likely to offer an international transfer service, but it’s good to know that using a payment institution like Wise may mean you pay less overall and unlock a better exchange rate, as it does use the mid-market rate for currency conversions.
