Ria1 international money transfers are available in many countries and regions globally, and can be set up in person at a Ria location, or online or in app if the person sending money wants a more convenient option.
As GCash2 is a super popular mobile wallet and card option here, receiving a remittance from Ria to GCash may seem like the natural way to get a payment from abroad.
Depending on where in the world they are, your sender may be able to set up a Ria to GCash payment so you can get your money in PHP to your GCash wallet. Usually, payments to mobile wallets can only be made in the Ria app - not at an in person location.
The options to make a Ria payment can vary a bit depending on where in the world, the sender is. In this guide we’ve used Ria US as our key source of information4 - if your sender is in another country, they’ll need to log into Ria’s local site to check if they can make GCash payments from their home country. And if not - no worries - we’ve also got a bit about an alternative, Wise, which is available in most countries around the world for easy payments to banks and GCash accounts.
As we’ve mentioned, you may run into a couple of important Ria to GCash eligibility requirements:
As the recipient of a Ria to GCash payment you’ll need to make sure you have a fully verified GCash account. This is easy to do online or in the GCash app as long as you have a government issued ID document, like your passport, to hand. Here are the steps to verify your account assuming you’re over 18, and have a Philippines mobile number5:
When they arrange your payment, the sender will be able to see the Ria to GCash transfer limits which apply. These may vary a bit depending on where the sender is based and how they’ve set up their Ria account. If the payment exceeds their limits with Ria, they’ll be notified when they create the transfer.
Your sender can make a Ria to GCash transfer in the GCash app. While Ria does support other payment options, including cash payments, when sending to a mobile wallet the sender must first download the Ria app.
Here’s how to make a Ria to GCash transfer, step by step6:
The Ria to GCash processing time is usually very quick. In fact, when sending to a mobile wallet, payments can be received in minutes in many cases.
Once the money is on the move, Ria to GCash tracking information will be available to the sender within the Ria app.
Ria to GCash fees could include an upfront transfer cost, paid by the sender, as well as an exchange rate markup, which is a fee added into the exchange rate being used to convert from the sender’s home currency to PHP.
There is no GCash fee to the recipient when you get paid to GCash by remittance from a provider like Ria7.
Any upfront transfer fees will instead be paid by the sender at the point of payment. Ria international transfers fees vary based on how the payment is arranged, transfer value, the location of the sender and more - but all the fees are shown to the sender before they initiate the payment.
The person sending you money should see what you’re expected to receive in PHP to your GCash account before they confirm the transfer. However, it’s good to know that there could be an extra fee rolled into the exchange rate used to convert the sender’s home currency to PHP, known as an exchange rate markup.
An exchange rate markup is a percentage fee included in the exchange rate used to deposit PHP from abroad to your GCash account. Exchange rate markups are variable and change based on the payment provider, the currencies involved and how the sender chooses to fund the payment.
To see the exchange rate markup applied to your Ria to GCash payment you’ll have to get the mid-market exchange rate for your currency pair, online or with a currency conversion tool. You can then calculate the markup by comparing the two exchange rates. The difference is the markup being used for your payment.
Not all providers use marked up exchange rates. We’ll highlight one - Wise - next.
