An SSS loan is offered by the Republic of Philippines Social Security System (SSS) to certain members. Different members may be eligible for one of several loans¹:
Whilst you can pay SSS loans over-the-counter at SSS Tellering counters², most people can also pay online, via the SSS mobile app or SSS website. You may also be able to pay through your bank’s mobile app or website³.
Before you can pay your SSS loans, you’ll need a few pieces of information to hand. Firstly, you’ll need an active SS number, which you can find on the MySSS Mobile app⁴. You’ll also need a Payment Reference Number (PRN). Generating a PRN is simple through your My.SSS account⁵:
Whilst your SS number stays the same for life, you’ll need to generate a new PRN for every contribution and loan payment you make. You can also have a PRN sent to you by email, or get one at an SSS branch.
To pay online, you’ll also need a registered account, internet access, and access to a supported payment channel - more on that later. You’ll use a similar process when paying your regular contributions, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to pay SSS contributions online.
Salary loans are paid in 24 equal monthly installments over 2 years⁶. The first payment is due on the last day of the month following the month you take out your loan. For example, this means if you take out a loan at any time in January, you’ll need to make your first payment by the 28th of February. The only exception to this is if the last day of the month falls on a weekend or public holiday, in which case you can pay on the next working day.
It is vital to make loan repayments on time. If you do not, you’ll be subject to a variety of penalties, which could affect both yourself and your loved ones. If, at the end of your loan period, you have not paid it off, the SSS reserves the right to collect the outstanding balance from other benefits that you or your beneficiaries may receive.
This includes final benefits such as pensions and may also affect your ability to get another salary loan. Loans may only be renewed immediately if your final three payments were made within the deadlines.
Whilst you cannot cancel a salary loan, you can repay it early. Once your payments have been made in full - including any penalties and interest - you can settle the loan.
