Revolut is a handy option if you want a multi-currency account to hold, send, and spend on a day to day basis.¹ If you’re using Revolut to pay for things, you may need to share the costs of a purchase with others - splitting the bill for a meal, or covering the price of a shared gift, for example.
So, can you split a bill on Revolut, and if so, how does a split bill work on Revolut? This guide covers all you need to know.
Plus we’ll touch on how you can split bills easily in the Wise Account - another excellent choice for a powerful international account and debit card.
Yes. The Revolut split bill/group option allows you to share payments with others.
With Split Bill² you tap on a payment you’ve made, and then share it with other Revolut account holders or people that are not Revolut users.
You can do this for a transaction you’ve made with your Revolut card, or a payment you’ve sent to someone, for example. You can also use the Group Bill³ function to create a group and share a bill with multiple people.

When you set up a split bill request on Revolut you’ll be able to decide either the amount, percentage or share you’d like other people to pay. This means you can split a bill equally, or not, depending on your needs.
You can split a bill with people who have Revolut accounts, and also with others who do not use Revolut. If you split a bill with someone on Revolut, they’ll just need to review the request in their Revolut app, and tap to pay. If the individual doesn’t have a Revolut account, they’ll need to initiate the transfer from their bank or other account.
- Log into your Revolut account, and tap the payment you want to split with someone else
- Tap the Split bill button, which is on the top left of the screen
- Select the Revolut contact, or group, you want to split the bill with
- Tap Continue
- Select the way you want the bill to be split, and tap to confirm
- Revolut will send a notification to the person, or people, you want to split the bill with, asking them to pay you the money.
The message that is received by the people you’re splitting the bill with makes it simple to tap and pay if they use Revolut, or to initiate a transfer from another account if not, so you should get your money in no time at all.
If you’re splitting a bill with someone who does not have a Revolut account, they’ll be asked to make the payment from their bank or using their preferred local payment method. If there’s no currency conversion required, this may be free - but the sender will need to check with their own bank or the provider they choose to use, to make sure they won’t be charged.
What about when different currencies are involved? If the person paying you will transfer from their bank, their bank will manage the currency conversion - which could involve paying fees.
Fees for sending a cross currency payment can include a transfer fee set by the bank, an exchange rate markup (a fee which is added to the rate used for conversion), and third party fees paid to intermediaries if the payment is processed through SWIFT. It’s important the sender checks the full extent of the fees before they pay, so there are no surprises.
If you’re requesting money in one currency - say EUR - and the person sending you a payment is a Revolut user and has a balance in EUR, there will be no fee from Revolut. If they don’t have a balance in the right currency, they may need to pay for currency conversion, depending on their account type and how they usually transact.
Revolut account plans⁴ have different levels of weekday currency conversion which does not attract additional fees. Standard plans can convert 1,000 EUR, and Plus can convert 3,000 EUR. If your payment takes you above this limit, there may be a fair usage fee of 1% for Standard plans, and 0.5% for Plus plans⁵. Other, higher tier, accounts do not have limits - but you pay a higher monthly fee in return.
There may also be a currency conversion fee if you’re making a payment on a weekend. This is 1% for Standard plans, and 0.5% for Plus, with no additional fee for other account types.

Wise in Ireland also offers a great value international account and card which can be used to hold 40+ currencies, and spend in 150+ countries. If you need to split a bill with others, you can get this feature with Wise, too.

You can split a bill in the Wise app or via website in a few simple steps, selecting to split evenly, or to manually enter the amount owed by one or more people.
Bills can be split with people who have a Wise account - or others who don’t use Wise just yet. The split bill request will send an in-app request to Wise users to pay the set amount, or will create a payment link to send to people who aren’t using a Wise account. They can then pay using a local payment method or bank transfer, for example.
If you need to manage a cross currency split bill, this is simple on Wise. The person splitting the bill just needs to set the currency they want to be paid in, and then others can send over the amount by following the link.
If the person sending money uses Wise they’ll benefit from the mid-market exchange rate, with low, transparent fees and no markups on the currency conversion. And if the sender isn’t with Wise just yet, this could be a great time to sign up to get a great value conversion and transfer.

If you can’t split a bill on Revolut, the problem could be⁶:
- The person sending you money has insufficient balance
- Either you or the other party isn’t fully verified by Revolut, or doesn’t have internal transfers enabled
- Compliance checks may be required before the payment can be made
- Your transfer may meet or exceed a limit for the specific currency⁷ - this is unusual, and you’ll see in the app if this is the problem.
