Exchange euros to dollars with Wise online

You don’t necessarily need to have USD cash in your pocket before you travel.

With a Wise Account you can add money in EUR, and convert to USD in a few taps in the Wise app or via the website. Then order a Wise card to spend when you get to the US, with no additional fee to spend a currency you already hold.

Plus you can use your card to get cash from an ATM in the states whenever you need to. That’s more secure than carrying lots of dollars in your pocket - and convenient too.

Best of all, Wise uses the mid-market rate with no markup added for currency exchanges. The mid-market rate is the mid-point of the rates used when currencies are traded on wholesale markets - and the benchmark for a good deal.

Many providers add a markup (a fee) to the rate they use to convert your euros to dollars, which you may not spot. Instead, Wise uses the mid-market rate with no extra fees and shows the costs of conversion so you can see them easily. There are no hidden fees to worry about - and no need to get out your calculator to look at the costs of conversion.

What you should know before exchanging money

So, if you’re worried about how to exchange euros to dollars you’ve got a few options. But choosing the right one can mean your money goes further when you go to the US.

Here are a few things to think about:

  • Give yourself time to exchange your currency: don’t leave it to the last minute if you want cash, as buying in the airport is often an expensive option
  • Ask: “what is the exchange rate from euros to dollars I am being offered?”: exchange services may advertise ‘no fees’ or ‘0% commission’ but that can hide the fact that their profit is included in the exchange rate used
  • Compare rates to find the one closest to the mid-market rate: generally the mid-market rate, which you can usually find on Google, is a good benchmark for a fair rate. By looking for a provider offering this rate or close to it, you may get more USD in the end. You can use the Wise currency converter to check the live mid-market rate before you convert.
  • Don’t carry too much cash when you travel: Be cautious about carrying all your dollars on you. Tourists are often the target of thieves, so making ATM withdrawals on arrival can offer peace of mind
  • Consider a multi-currency account and card: an account from a provider like Wise can cut out the hassle and allow you to manage your travel spending with just your phone via app
  • Only use legitimate providers: don’t be tempted by ‘too good to be true’ services. Use reputable money changing services only to avoid scams and fraud.
