Can I use a Wise card to withdraw cash in Japan?

Yes, you can use your Wise debit card to withdraw cash from ATMs in Japan. While not all Japanese ATMs accept international cards, there are still many options to rely on. Local withdrawals in Japan are typically only supported at AEON, E-net, and Daily Yamazaki ATMs, though it's not guaranteed.

With your Wise debit card, you can withdraw up to £200 per month for free, in up to two withdrawals. Wise will not charge you for these withdrawals, but additional charges may occur from independent ATM networks

There’s a fee for going over this amount and also for making more withdrawals. If you exceed this allowance, a fee of 1.75% will apply to the amount withdrawn. Starting from your third withdrawal in the same month, a fixed fee of £0.50 will also be charged, in addition to the 1.75% fee.

You can always double-check your current withdrawal limits in the Wise app or online.

Keep in mind that some ATM providers in Japan might charge their own fees, but these are usually shown before you confirm the transaction.

How to withdraw money in Japan with the Wise card?

Once you find a Japanese ATM that supports international cards (AEON, E-net, and Daily Yamazaki ATMs are the best options), you can insert your Wise debit card and withdraw cash.

Here’s what the process typically looks like:

  • Insert your card into the ATM
  • Enter your PIN
  • Select the withdrawal option and enter the amount you need
  • Select to get paid in the local currency, but avoid letting the ATM do the conversion
  • Collect your cash and take your card

If you encounter a problem when entering your PIN, it may be because the ATM only accepts 5- or 6-digit PINs. In this case, try adding one or two zeros to the end of your 4-digit PIN.

For example, if your PIN is ‘1234’, try entering ‘12340’ or ‘123400’.
