Walmart international transfer: Countries and territories

You can go to your local Walmart and send money to your friends and family both internationally and within the US.

Ria Money Transfer offers 2 services: Walmart2Walmart transfer and Walmart2World transfer.²

Walmart2Walmart lets your recipient pick up money at more than 7,400 Walmart and Bodega Aurrera stores across the US and Mexico.²

In turn, Walmart2World reaches recipients around the world, offering pickup options like cash collection, direct bank deposits, mobile wallet transfers, or even home delivery.²

Western Union and MoneyGram provide similar international coverage through Walmart locations. You can send money to virtually any country worldwide, which is very convenient.

You can also send a Walmart money order if you prefer this transfer method.

Walmart international transfer: Limits

Your Walmart2World and Walmart2Walmart transfer limits depend on a few different factors, such as which provider you use (Western Union, Ria, or MoneyGram) and whether you're sending domestically or internationally.

Some providers clearly state their limits, and others keep them less transparent.

For example, for MoneyGram, payments are usually capped at 10,000 USD per single payment, and a cumulative total of 10,000 USD in 30 days

However, if you need to send more, you may be able to do so by visiting a MoneyGram agent in a Walmart store. You may be asked to provide some additional details or documents for large payments, depending on the amount and destination country.³

Ria Money sets different limits based on how you pay. Cash-funded transfers are limited to 495 USD per transaction. Other payment methods allow up to 14,999.99 USD every 30 days for most countries.⁴

Western Union doesn't publish specific transfer limits, but you can expect them to generally stay under 5,000 USD for most countries.

The limits may vary depending on your Walmart location. But, generally speaking, none of these services is a good option for sending large amounts of money. They can work well for smaller transfers, though.

With Wise, you can send up to 1,000,000 USD per wire transaction to 140+ countries, with the mid-market exchange rate and low, transparent fees.

How to send an international wire transfer with Walmart

Sending a Walmart international money transfer is pretty easy.

Once you get to the store, head to the Customer Service Desk or Money Center. Bring your photo identification and be ready to pay with either US cash or a PIN-based debit card.¹

You'll need to provide your personal details, such as your name, date of birth, and phone number. You'll also need information about your recipient — usually their name and location details.

Photo identification will be required, and your ID must be valid, government-issued, and undamaged. Your options include:¹

  • US driver's license (including Puerto Rico)
  • State ID (including Puerto Rico)
  • US passport
  • International passport
  • Military ID
  • US permanent resident card
  • Tribal ID
  • Mexican matrícula consular

Each provider (Western Union, MoneyGram, or Ria) may have specific requirements, but the staff will ask for any additional information they need to complete your transfer.

If you have any questions about Walmart2Walmart money transfer requirements or what information you need for an international transfer, you can also get in touch with your local store before coming in.

How much does it cost to send money abroad with Walmart?

Walmart2World and Walmart2Walmart money transfer fees aren't fixed. There's no flat amount that Walmart will charge you. Instead, transfer costs depend on factors like the amount you're sending, the destination country, how your recipient will collect the money, and which provider you choose.

That said, credit cards typically carry the highest fees, while cash, debit cards, and bank accounts are usually the more affordable options. Learn more about international transfer fees and what to expect, because they can be costly.

Walmart exchange rates

When sending money abroad, Western Union, Ria, and MoneyGram all add markups to currency exchange rates. This means you don't get the mid-market exchange rate you might see on Google.

All of these providers buy currency at the mid-market rate, then sell it to you at a higher rate. The difference between what they pay and what you pay becomes part of their profit.

This markup can add significant costs to your transfer, especially for larger amounts, even if the up-front transfer fee seems reasonable. For example, if you want to send 1,000 USD to Mexico, a 3% markup (which is standard for many providers) would cost you an extra 30 USD.

Over time and for larger transfers, these hidden costs add up significantly.

How long do Walmart international money transfers take?

Most transfers are available within minutes when you pay with cash, credit card, or debit card and your recipient collects the money in cash. Wire transfer funding takes longer (usually a few days) to process.¹

When you send your transfer at Walmart, the staff can give you an estimated delivery time based on your destination country and chosen pickup method.

How can I track my transfer with Walmart?

Both Walmart2World and Walmart2Walmart tracking is available.

You'll receive a receipt with tracking information after sending your transfer. This receipt includes a reference number that you can use to track your money through the provider's website or app, whether that's Western Union, MoneyGram, or Ria.

Your recipient will also likely need this reference number to collect the funds, so make sure to share it with them along with any other required pickup details.

Are Walmart international transfers safe?

Yes, Walmart partners with established, regulated money transfer companies that have been operating for many years. Western Union, MoneyGram, and Ria all follow strict financial regulations and security protocols.

However, you need to watch out for scams. Scammers often target money transfer services because once you confirm your transfer, it's usually irreversible.

With scams, someone might contact you pretending to be a friend in an emergency, a romantic interest, or offering a fake prize or job opportunity. They'll usually pressure you to send money quickly, often to someone you don't know personally.

To avoid scams, never send money to someone you haven't met in person, and always verify your recipient's identity. Most importantly, if something feels wrong, don't send the money, and take the time to think about it.

However, these scam risks have less to do with Western Union, MoneyGram, and Ria and more with the fact that, unfortunately, scams exist everywhere. All of these providers are safe to use as long as you're being smart.

That said, there are other things to worry about, such as Walmart's international money transfer fees. Sending money from your local store is convenient, but it can be costly. To find the best deal, make sure to compare different providers, including Wise.
