Can you wire money at Walmart?

Yes, you can wire money at Walmart using three established money transfer services: MoneyGram, Ria, and Western Union.¹

All of these companies do international and domestic money transfers, but what each of them offers at your local Walmart is slightly different. Here's a closer look:

MoneyGram

MoneyGram connects you to 5 billion accounts across more than 430,000 locations in different countries and territories.²

You have two options for sending money through MoneyGram at Walmart:²

  • From a Walmart store: Use either Walmart2World services or MoneyGram-branded transfer services at the customer service desk
  • Online transfers: Send money through MoneyGram’s dedicated Walmart website

MoneyGram is an established provider, so it's an easy and secure way to send a Walmart international money transfer.

Ria

Ria Money Transfer is another provider that powers Walmart's wire transfer services.

At your local store, you can use Walmart2Walmart and Walmart2World, which are two different ways to send money to your destination:³

  • Walmart2Walmart money transfer: Send money for pickup at more than 7,400 Walmart and Bodega Aurrera stores across the US and Mexico
  • Walmart2World money transfer: Send money internationally for cash pickup, bank deposits, mobile wallet deposits, or home delivery

You can also send domestic bank account transfers to any of 29,000+ financial institutions throughout the US. If you don't want to come into the store, you can also download the Walmart2Walmart app to send money online.³

Western Union

Western Union operates from more than 4,700 Walmart locations across the US through both Walmart2World and Western Union-branded money transfer services.⁴

You can send money to 200+ countries and territories, including popular destinations like Mexico, the Philippines, and Colombia.

It works similarly to MoneyGram and Ria, but if you want to send money specifically with Western Union, it may only be available in store, not online.

How to wire money at Walmart

Send money online through Walmart

You can send money online through Walmart's website using their MoneyGram partnership.

It's a pretty simple process:

  1. Enter the amount you want to send and your destination country
  2. MoneyGram will show you fee estimates and payment options (such as credit card, debit card, or bank account)
  3. Select a delivery method for your recipient and submit your payment

It's a good idea to compare wire transfer fees with other money transfer providers to see if you're getting a good deal. Sometimes, shopping around can save you a significant amount of money, especially when there's a currency exchange involved.

Send money in person at Walmart

It can be very convenient to send a Walmart wire in person. All you need to do is visit your local Walmart store and go to the Customer Service Desk or Money Center. Make sure to bring a valid photo ID with you, and you can pay using cash or a PIN-based debit card.¹

You'll need to provide your personal information, including your name, address, date of birth, and phone number. The staff may also ask for details about your recipient, such as their name and location.

How much does Walmart charge to do a wire transfer?

Walmart doesn't have a flat fee that it charges you for all money transfers. How much you pay will vary based on your destination country and payment method. For example, credit card payments typically carry much higher fees than other payment options.

Beyond transfer fees, you'll also likely pay currency exchange rate markups. MoneyGram, Western Union, and Ria all apply a less favorable exchange rate than the mid-market rate, and the difference becomes part of their profit.

This is often frustrating, since the currency exchange can feel like a "hidden fee" that you're paying in addition to the international wire transfer fees, which can already be quite high.

💡 Wise can help you save on exchange rate markups and hidden fees. See how Wise compares and make a fast, cheap and secure international transfer:

How long does it take to wire money at Walmart?

In most cases, cash becomes available for pickup within 10 minutes of sending your transfer. Some international wire transfer times may take longer if Western Union, Ria, or MoneyGram needs to review them for security purposes.¹

When you pay with a debit or credit card, your recipient can usually collect the money within minutes of your transaction. Bank transfers can take longer to process, so your recipient may need to wait a little longer before the funds arrive.

How to receive a wire transfer at Walmart

To pick up a money transfer, go to the Customer Service Desk or Money Center at any Walmart location and bring a valid photo ID. You can also collect transfers at MoneyGram and Western Union agent locations.¹

If you can't pick up your transfer right away, contact the service provider to find out how long you have:¹

  • For Ria transactions (Walmart2Walmart or Walmart2World): Call 1-855-355-2144

  • For MoneyGram transactions (domestic, international, or Walmart2World): Call 1-800-926-9400

  • For Western Union transactions (domestic, international, or Walmart2World): Call 1-844-982-4287

Sending money at Walmart is convenient, but it can also be expensive because of transfer fees and currency exchange rate markups.

Plus, you typically can't send large amounts. For example, the MoneyGram limit is only 10,000 USD per transfer every 30 days, and sometimes the limits may be lower depending on your local store.⁵

Overall, it's a good idea to compare different providers.
