Wizz Air Baggage Policy: A Guide to Checked and Carry-on Allowances and Fees

Yadana Chaw

Founded in 2003, Wizz Air (W6), is a European ultra low-cost carrier from Hungary. They operate primarily between Central/Eastern Europe and Western Europe/Middle East, offering flights to 190+ destinations.

Wizz Air’s baggage policy is primarily determined by the specific fare bundle selected (Basic, WIZZ Go, or WIZZ Plus) and the passenger's purchase of the ""WIZZ Priority"" service. The allowance for each traveler is also influenced by the weight category chosen for checked items, which ranges from small 10 kg bags to larger 32 kg suitcases. Wizz Air does not offer a standard free carry-on for the overhead bin; instead, this privilege is reserved for those who pay for Priority status or higher-tier bundles.

Checked bag vs carry on vs personal item

Packing starts with understanding your bags:

  • Checked baggage is the larger luggage checked into the cargo hold; for Wizz Air, the maximum standard size is 149 cm / 59 in.
  • Carry-on bags (also referred to as cabin bags) go into the cabin for essentials, subject to the 100ml liquid rule, with a max size of 40 x 30 x 20 cm.
  • The Personal Item is the smallest (like a laptop bag or purse) and must fit under the seat in front of you.

For safety, remember all spare lithium batteries, power banks, and e-cigarettes must be in your carry-on, while sharp objects must always be placed in checked baggage.

One small carry-on item is included free of charge for all passengers; it must be stored under the seat in front.

Wizz Air checked baggage allowance

Wizz Air primarily operates on the Piece Concept for its checked luggage.

The Piece Concept limits the number of bags you can bring (e.g., 2 bags maximum, each up to 23kg), meaning you cannot consolidate one big bag into two small ones without paying extra. Conversely, the Weight Concept limits the total combined weight of all your bags (e.g., a total of 30 kg across any number of pieces).

Class / Fare TypePrimary AllowanceMax Weight
Basic0 Pieces IncludedN/A

WIZZ Plus1 Bag32 kg

Wizz Air's allowance is a purchase-per-bag, defined by weight tiers (10 kg, 20 kg, 26 kg, 32 kg).

Wizz Air extra baggage fees

Wizz Air applies distinct charges for additional bags, overweight bags, and oversized carry-on items. These charges are separate and often much higher when paid at the airport versus when pre-booked online.

Overweight Bags:

  • If a checked bag exceeds its purchased weight, an excess weight fee of €13 per kilogram is charged at the airport.

Oversized Cabin Bags:

  • If your free carry-on or trolley bag does not fit in the sizer at the gate, it will be placed in the hold for an oversized gate fee of €65.

Additional Checked Bags:

  • Additional checked bags must be purchased as one of the defined weight tiers (10 kg, 20 kg, 26 kg, or 32 kg). Passengers can check in up to six pieces of luggage per flight. Maximum of three bags can be purchased online, with the remaining three needing to be purchased at the airport at higher rates. Fees starts at €14.00 for a 10 kg bag.

Wizz Air special baggage policy

  • Infants (under 2): Infants traveling on an adult's lap do not have a dedicated allowance for a checked or trolley bag. However, they are permitted one small piece of cabin baggage (max 40 x 30 x 20 cm, 10 kg) for their necessities. A fully foldable baby stroller, pushchair, or car seat can be checked into the hold free of charge.
  • Sporting Equipment: Sports equipment (e.g., ski, snowboard, golf bags, diving gear) must be pre-booked and will incur a special fee. The equipment must not exceed the checked baggage dimensions and the maximum 32 kg weight limit.
  • Musical Instruments: Small instruments in a case up to 80 x 40 x 23 cm (max 10 kg) may be carried on board as the passenger's only cabin item, provided WIZZ Priority is purchased. Larger instruments can be checked as special baggage or carried on an extra seat, which must be purchased.
  • Special Needs/Disability Equipment: Mobility aids, such as wheelchairs and crutches, are transported free of charge and do not count toward the baggage allowance.
