Volaris Baggage Policy: A Guide to Checked and Carry-on Allowances and Fees

Yadana Chaw

Founded in 2004, Volaris (Y4), is a Mexican low-cost carrier from Mexico. They operate extensively across Mexico, the US, and Central America, offering flights to 70+ destinations.

Volaris' baggage policy is primarily governed by the fare brand selected at the time of booking, namely Zero, Basic, or Plus. The allowance is further influenced by whether the flight is domestic within Mexico or international, and whether the passenger holds a v.club membership or an INVEX credit card.

Checked bag vs carry on vs personal item

Packing starts with understanding your bags:

  • Checked baggage is the larger luggage checked into the cargo hold; for Volaris, the maximum standard size is 158 cm / 62 in.
  • Carry-on bags (also referred to as cabin bags) go into the cabin for essentials, subject to the 100ml liquid rule, with a max size of 55 x 40 x 25 cm.
  • The Personal Item is the smallest (like a laptop bag or purse) and must fit under the seat in front of you.

For safety, remember all spare lithium batteries, power banks, and e-cigarettes must be in your carry-on, while sharp objects must always be placed in checked baggage.

One personal item is included with all fares with a max size of 18 x 14 x 8 in (45 x 35 x 20 cm) and must fit under the seat in front of you. The combined weight of the personal item and carry-on, if included, must not exceed 44 lbs (20 kg).

Volaris checked baggage allowance

Volaris primarily operates on the Piece Concept for its checked luggage.

The Piece Concept limits the number of bags you can bring (e.g., 2 bags maximum, each up to 23kg), meaning you cannot consolidate one big bag into two small ones without paying extra. Conversely, the Weight Concept limits the total combined weight of all your bags (e.g., a total of 30 kg across any number of pieces).

Basic133 lb
Plus155 lb

These allowances apply to all routes. Each checked bag must not exceed 62 linear inches (length + width + height). Cardholders with a Volaris INVEX Card may be eligible for additional baggage allowances and increased weight limits.

Volaris extra baggage fees

Volaris charges for additional bags and for exceeding the weight or size limits separately, with fees determined by the season and purchase time. You’ll find the lowest rates during the initial booking and the highest rates at the airport.

Overweight Fees:

  • 16 kg to 25 kg: Costs up to $800 MXN (Domestic) or $120 USD (International).
  • 26 kg to 35 kg: Costs up to $1000 MXN (Domestic) or $150 USD (International).
  • 36 kg to 45kg: Costs up to $2,000 MXN (Domestic) or $220 USD (International).
  • Maximum weight accepted is 99.2 lbs (45 kg).

Oversized Fees:

  • A flat fee applies to bags between 62 and 78.7 total inches.

Volaris special baggage policy

  • Sporting Equipment: Volaris accepts sports equipment (e.g., bicycles, golf, skis, boards) as checked baggage. This counts toward the 55 lbs (25 kg) weight limit. If it exceeds 55 lbs or 62 total inches (158 cm), the applicable overweight/oversize fees are charged in addition to the special handling fee. The weight limit is strictly 99 lbs (45 kg), and the maximum size is 98.4 total inches (250 cm).
  • Musical Instruments: Instruments measuring a maximum of 22 x 16 x 10 in may be carried as the carry-on bag. If larger, they must be checked and are subject to the special baggage handling fee and/or the appropriate oversize/overweight fees. Checked instruments cannot exceed 78.7 total inches (200 cm).
  • Infants: An infant (under 2 years old) traveling on an adult's lap receives no checked baggage allowance (unless on a Plus fare). However, one stroller or baby pram can be gate-checked or checked at the counter free of charge.
  • Volaris INVEX Cards: Passengers who pay for their flight with a Volaris INVEX credit card receive additional free baggage benefits, including a free checked bag (up to 55 lbs) and an increased carry-on weight limit (up to 44 lbs).
