Founded in 1993, Airasia (AK), is a major Asian low-cost carrier from Malaysia. They operate extensive short-haul routes across Southeast Asia, offering flights to 165+ destinations.
AirAsia’s baggage policy is primarily determined by the specific fare brand selected, such as Value Pack, Premium Flex, or Premium Flatbed, which often bundle checked baggage into the ticket price. Additionally, frequent flyer status within the AirAsia MOVE rewards program can grant members extra baggage weight or priority handling.
Packing starts with understanding your bags:
- Checked baggage is the larger luggage checked into the cargo hold; for Airasia, the maximum standard size is 119 x 119 x 81 cm.
- Carry-on bags (also referred to as cabin bags) go into the cabin for essentials, subject to the 100ml liquid rule, with a max size of 56 x 36 x 23 cm.
- The Personal Item is the smallest (like a laptop bag or purse) and must fit under the seat in front of you.
For safety, remember all spare lithium batteries, power banks, and e-cigarettes must be in your carry-on, while sharp objects must always be placed in checked baggage.
| Class / Fare Type | Carry-on Bag Pieces | Weight Limit (Combined) |
|---|---|---|
| All Fares (Standard Cabin Allowance) | 1 Cabin Bag + 1 Personal Item) | 7 kg |
| Upgrade (Xtra Carry-On) | 1 Cabin Bag + 1 Personal Item | 14 kg (Max 10 kg per bag) |
Your personal item must fit under the seat (max 40 x 30 x 10 cm), and your carry-on bag must stay within 56 x 36 x 23 cm.
Airasia primarily operates on the Weight Concept for its checked luggage.
The Piece Concept limits the number of bags you can bring (e.g., 2 bags maximum, each up to 23kg), meaning you cannot consolidate one big bag into two small ones without paying extra. Conversely, the Weight Concept limits the total combined weight of all your bags (e.g., a total of 30 kg across any number of pieces).
| Class / Fare Type | Primary Allowance (Total Weight) |
|---|---|
| Low Fare / Standard | 0 kg |
| Value Pack / Premium Flex | 20 kg |
| Premium Flatbed | 40 kg |
The weight of any single checked bag is strictly limited to 32 kg (70 lbs) and dimensions of 81 x 119 x 119 cm, regardless of the total purchased allowance.
AirAsia charges for exceeding the baggage allowance (both checked and cabin) based on a per-kilogram rate or a fixed fee at the gate. No single checked item is accepted if it exceeds 32 kg.
