AirAsia Baggage Policy: A Guide to Checked and Carry-on Allowances and Fees

Yadana Chaw

Founded in 1993, Airasia (AK), is a major Asian low-cost carrier from Malaysia. They operate extensive short-haul routes across Southeast Asia, offering flights to 165+ destinations.

AirAsia’s baggage policy is primarily determined by the specific fare brand selected, such as Value Pack, Premium Flex, or Premium Flatbed, which often bundle checked baggage into the ticket price. Additionally, frequent flyer status within the AirAsia MOVE rewards program can grant members extra baggage weight or priority handling.

Checked bag vs carry on vs personal item

Packing starts with understanding your bags:

  • Checked baggage is the larger luggage checked into the cargo hold; for Airasia, the maximum standard size is 119 x 119 x 81 cm.
  • Carry-on bags (also referred to as cabin bags) go into the cabin for essentials, subject to the 100ml liquid rule, with a max size of 56 x 36 x 23 cm.
  • The Personal Item is the smallest (like a laptop bag or purse) and must fit under the seat in front of you.

For safety, remember all spare lithium batteries, power banks, and e-cigarettes must be in your carry-on, while sharp objects must always be placed in checked baggage.

Your personal item must fit under the seat (max 40 x 30 x 10 cm), and your carry-on bag must stay within 56 x 36 x 23 cm.

Airasia checked baggage allowance

Airasia primarily operates on the Weight Concept for its checked luggage.

The Piece Concept limits the number of bags you can bring (e.g., 2 bags maximum, each up to 23kg), meaning you cannot consolidate one big bag into two small ones without paying extra. Conversely, the Weight Concept limits the total combined weight of all your bags (e.g., a total of 30 kg across any number of pieces).

Class / Fare TypePrimary Allowance (Total Weight)
Low Fare / Standard0 kg
Value Pack / Premium Flex20 kg
Premium Flatbed40 kg

The weight of any single checked bag is strictly limited to 32 kg (70 lbs) and dimensions of 81 x 119 x 119 cm, regardless of the total purchased allowance.

Airasia extra baggage fees

AirAsia charges for exceeding the baggage allowance (both checked and cabin) based on a per-kilogram rate or a fixed fee at the gate. No single checked item is accepted if it exceeds 32 kg.

  • Excess Baggage: You can pre-book extra checked baggage allowance up to 4 hours before your scheduled departure time, often at a discounted rate. If your baggage exceeds your purchased allowance, you can still purchase the necessary excess weight at the airport check-in counter. This fee is generally calculated per kilogram for the weight checked above your total allowance.
  • Oversized Carry-on: This fee is charged at the boarding gate if a passenger's cabin baggage exceeds the 7 kg limit or the specified size limits. The bag must then be checked into the hold.

Airasia special baggage policy

  • Infants and Mobility: Infants (under 2 years old) are not allocated any cabin baggage allowance. However, baby strollers, prams, buggies, manual wheelchairs, and mobility devices are accepted as checked baggage free of charge.
  • Sporting Equipment: Sports equipment (e.g., Golf, Surfboard, Bicycle) is accepted as checked baggage but must be pre-booked and counted toward the total weight allowance.
  • Free Surfboard Policy: AirAsia offers a Free Surfboard Policy allowing 1 x 15 kg surfboard free of charge on select routes.
  • Musical Instruments: Smaller musical items which fit the 56 x 36 x 23 cm cabin bag dimensions are allowed as the carry-on bag. Larger instruments that exceed cabin size limits can be carried in the cabin if a separate seat is reserved and the appropriate fare is paid. The instrument must not exceed 103 cm (H) x 41 cm (L) x 41 cm (W) and 75 kg.
