Taiwan is a favourite destination for Singaporeans, known for its night markets, scenic spots, and vibrant food culture. If you’re planning a trip, you might be wondering how to use your Wise card in Taiwan to spend New Taiwan dollars (TWD) conveniently, with transparent fees and the mid-market exchange rate.

So, does Wise work in Taiwan for payments and ATM withdrawals? Here’s what you need to know.

Can I use Wise in Taiwan?

Yes. If you have a Wise account issued in Singapore, you can use it when travelling to Taiwan to:

  • Spend using your Wise card
  • Convert SGD to other supported currencies
  • Send money internationally

Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate, with fees shown upfront. This means no hidden markups when you spend or transfer money overseas.

With Wise, you can hold and convert 40+ currencies, all in one account.

Can I use the Wise card in Taiwan?

Yes. Both physical and digital Wise cards can be used in Taiwan anywhere Visa or Mastercard payments are supported.

However, there is one key difference to note:

  • You can’t hold a TWD balance in your Wise account
  • You can’t use Wise to send a payment from TWD to another currency

This means that when you pay or withdraw cash in Taiwan, Wise will automatically convert your balance from another currency at the mid-market exchange rate, with a low conversion fee.

If you hold multiple currencies, Wise will automatically choose the one with the lowest conversion cost when you spend.

How to use Wise in Taiwan

You can use your Wise card in Taiwan in a few different ways:

  • Pay in-store where cards are accepted
  • Withdraw cash from ATMs
  • Pay for transport, shopping, and dining

Card payments are accepted in many places, especially in cities like Taipei. However, cash is still widely used, particularly at night markets, smaller shops, and local eateries.

If you’re travelling between cities, it’s worth planning ahead for transport options like the High Speed Rail. Here’s a guide on how to buy Taiwan HSR tickets before your trip.

Having a mix of card and cash will give you the most flexibility.

Where to withdraw cash in Taiwan

ATMs are widely available across Taiwan, including in:

  • Convenience stores like 7-Eleven and FamilyMart
  • MRT stations
  • Banks

Most major ATMs support international cards, but it’s still a good idea to look for machines with Visa or Mastercard logos.

Do note that:

  • ATM operators may charge their own fees
  • Fees and limits can vary depending on the ATM provider

With a Singapore-issued Wise card, you can make ATM withdrawals fee-free up to 100 SGD each month, with no withdrawal count limit before low fees apply.

💡 Tip: Always choose to withdraw in TWD and decline any currency conversion offered by the ATM to avoid extra charges.

What to know about fees

Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate, with low, transparent conversion fees from 0.26%, so you’ll always see the cost upfront.

Since you can’t hold TWD in your account, all transactions in Taiwan will involve automatic currency conversion.

ATM operators in Taiwan may also charge their own fees depending on the machine.

Using your Wise digital card in Taiwan

Wise lets you create digital cards, which are especially useful for travel.

With a digital card, you can:

  • Pay online or in apps
  • Add it to mobile wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay
  • Freeze or replace your card instantly if needed

You can create up to 3 digital cards, each with its own details for added security.

How to order a Wise card in Singapore

Order your Wise card before you travel, so you can spend easily as soon as you arrive. Physical cards are typically delivered within 7 to 14 days, but you can start using a Wise digital card immediately after ordering if you’re in a hurry.

Before you travel

Before heading to Taiwan, it’s a good idea to prepare your balance.

You can:

  • Add SGD to your Wise account
  • Hold other supported currencies in your account
  • Spend in SGD and let Wise automatically convert at the point of payment

Either way, you’ll get the mid-market exchange rate, with low, transparent conversion fees from 0.26%.

It’s also a good idea to:

  • Set your card PIN in case it’s required
  • Carry some cash for smaller merchants and night markets
