You may find you need specific extreme sports travel insurance to provide protection and reassurance, as these activities may be excluded from your normal travel insurance policy.
This guide is here to help you find the best adventure sports travel insurance for your needs. We'll also introduce the Wise card, a handy travel companion to make seamless card payments when you're overseas.

Extreme sports travel insurance, also called adventurous or hazardous sports insurance, is usually intended to cover activities like skiing, diving, parachuting, long-distance or high-altitude running, and so on.
Some providers split out their policies so you may find separate winter sports travel insurance for skiing and snowboarding, and a different water sports policy if you need scuba diving travel insurance, for example.
Not all travel insurance plans automatically include coverage for extreme sports - some may offer this as a separate plan or as an add-on, due to the increased risk involved.
Whether or not you need specific travel insurance with extreme sports coverage depends on your travel plans.
If you’re heading off to hit the slopes, it makes sense to get ski travel insurance, for example, as winter sports tend to have a higher risk of injury, and can come with hefty bills if you need to be evacuated from a difficult location.
This eventuality might not be covered by your normal travel insurance plan, leaving you with a large bill if you are not adequately covered.
The exact inclusions in any given plan do vary, but activities that are commonly covered can include:
Not all extreme or adventure sports are covered by every policy, so it’s crucial to read your policy wording carefully.
Often, any competitive sports are excluded, for example. Hiking may be capped at an altitude of 3,000 meters, and scuba at a depth of 30 meters. And any activity which you undertake without proper training, support or safety equipment is also likely to be excluded.
Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the best adventure sports travel insurance options we've selected for this guide. We've got more on each coming up right after.

A reminder of the best adventure sports travel insurance options:
FWD: Best for automatic inclusion of adventure sports gear replacement cover as part of your policy
Income: Best for unplanned adventures - arrange your insurance even a day after leaving Singapore
MSIG: Best if you want to choose the policy you prefer and add on extreme sports for a low cost
ETIQA: Best for automatic coverage of many common adventure activities as long as you use a recognised guide or tour operator
Singlife: Best for choosing the type of add-on cover you need, so you only pay for the specific adventure sport cover required
FWD offers 3 different cover levels for annual and per-trip coverage, on a regional basis. Many sports considered ‘adventure activities’ are covered. Policies also cover some sports equipment, including skis and snowboards, in the case of damage.
Available adventure travel cover: Broad range of sports included automatically in your policy
Adventure travel limits and key exclusions: Covered, subject to exclusion of trekking 3,000 metres above sea level
NTUC Income has 3 plans which do not include pre-existing medical cover, and also a suite of options for customers with pre-existing conditions. You can generate a quote for your cover online, and you may benefit from a new user discount. Plans generally include a reasonable level of cover for more adventurous tourist activities under supervision.
Available adventure travel cover: Broad range of sports included, when undertaken with a recognised guide or tour operator
Adventure travel limits and key exclusions: Activities like hiking, bungee jumping,
parachuting, abseiling, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, and snorkelling are included as long as you follow rules and regulations and use appropriate safety equipment⁸
MSIG doesn’t cover adventure activities as part of its standard plans, but does offer this as an optional extra. This allows you to tailor-make your cover level, selecting the policy which meets your needs for things like medical, trip disruption and baggage loss, and adding in your adventure element on top.
Available adventure travel cover: Add-on cover only on Travel Easy Flex policy
Adventure travel limits and key exclusions: Activities like parachuting, winter sports, scuba, marathon, jetski are included with the add-on policy; bear in mind there’s an exclusion of trekking 3,000+ metres above sea level⁹
ETIQA has 3 core plans which offer some cover for adventure activities as long as you’re joining in as part of a group or with a recognised guide. You’ll also need to make sure you use all reasonable safety equipment and follow local rules and regulations when taking part.
Available adventure travel cover: Broad range of sports included, when undertaken with a recognised guide or tour operator
Adventure travel limits and key exclusions: Activities like parachuting, sky diving, bungee jumping, hang-gliding, paragliding, leisure scuba diving no deeper than 30 meters and non-competitive winter sports are covered
Singlife splits its adventure activity cover into two separate elements for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, and also adventure water sports like jet skiing. This means you can choose to only add on the elements you actually need for your trip, which may be cheaper than getting blanket insurance covering all adventure activities.
Available adventure travel cover: Winter sports and adventure water sports included with an add-on only
Adventure travel limits and key exclusions: Check the full policy wording - while some common tourist activities may qualify for automatic cover, winter sports and things like jetskiing need add-on cover.
