Public Bank Malaysia uses three systems for credit card rewards: VIP Points System, Cash MegaBonus System, and Specialised Points Systems. Each system has its own perks, and the one that works best for you will depend on what you're looking for.
The VIP points system and specialised points systems – which include Air Miles and Green Points – can be redeemed for a range of rewards, including categories such as¹:
- Air Miles
- Gift vouchers
- Gadgets and accessories
- Health, beauty and wellness
Generally, 31,000 points can be redeemed for a 50 MYR gift voucher, meaning that 620 points are worth around 1 MYR.
Alternatively, some cards offer cashback. The details of how much cashback you'll receive varies by card, with some offering more for specific categories of purchase.
The “best” rewards card depends entirely on what you're looking for. There's a wide variety of cards on offer, each with different reward systems that may suit different people. On top of that, different cards reward different transaction types – some offer multipliers for categories like contactless payments – so the card that works best for you will also depend on your spending habits.
When choosing your card, you'll need to make sure you meet the minimum income requirements, shown below. All cards also require the principal cardholder to be at least 21 years old, and any supplementary cardholders to be at least 18.
| Card Name | Minimum Income | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| PB Petron Visa Gold Credit Card² | 24,000 MYR annually | Anyone looking to bring down the cost of driving their vehicle |

PB also has required documents to apply for your credit card, to prove your income. These depend on your employment type, but if you are an employee you may need⁹:
- Latest month payslip
- Latest EA statement
- EPF statement
- Employment letter
These must be enclosed with your application. You'll also need to provide proof of identification, such as a passport or MyPR¹⁰.

Some of the credit cards offered by PB have multipliers for overseas spending. That might sound like great value on paper, but the costs can quickly outweigh the benefits of those extra points. Understanding how you'll be charged for overseas credit card spending is vital to avoid unexpected bills when you return home.
When you spend abroad, banks typically charge an exchange rate markup, meaning they sell foreign currency (to you, the consumer) for more than they buy it. This is known as an exchange rate markup – and it means you receive a less favourable rate than the mid-market rate you'd find on Google.
With PB, you'll also be charged 1.25%, with the rate used by Visa or Mastercard – which is likely to include a markup of between 1% and 3%. This can add up rapidly, particularly if you are regularly spending abroad or spend a large amount. Wise, on the other hand, only uses the mid-market rate, instead charging a small upfront fee, so you always know what your conversion will cost.

With your Wise account, you can make online payments in foreign currencies, or use your Wise card to spend whilst abroad – allowing you to make the most of your money whilst on holiday.
Not sure whether Wise will give you the better deal? Use a currency conversion calculator to see exactly how much foreign currency you'll receive for your MYR.
If you're heading somewhere abroad where you'll need cash, keep in mind that cash withdrawals are subject to immediate, higher interest rates, as well as cash advance fees. For PB credit cards, you'll be charged up to 5.10 MYR, plus 0.65% of the amount you take out, every time you withdraw cash, as well as 18% interest p.a. – so it's generally worth avoiding using your credit card at ATMs. With Wise, you can make 2 free ATM withdrawals of up to 1,000 MYR per month.
The range of credit card rewards is one of the things that makes PB stand out among Malaysian banks. You can redeem your rewards points in one of two ways:
- Through the PB Product Catalogue page
- By filling in and sending the redemption form
You can browse the product catalogue online and add any products you'd like to your cart¹³. Then, simply check out by filling in your card details. If you'd rather go analogue, you can print out the redemption form – once it's been filled in with details of what you'd like to redeem, how many, and your card details, it can be faxed or mailed to PB¹⁴. Details of where to send the form can be found at the top.
To make the most of your credit card, focus on purchases that will earn you points multipliers or extra cashback. When choosing your card, aim for one where you already spend in these categories, so you earn extra on your everyday spending.
Public Bank credit cards can be a great choice – they let you earn points on your purchases, which can be redeemed for a wide range of perks. They offer especially good cards for local Malaysian dining, online shopping, and petrol.
By allowing you to redeem for air miles and travel-related perks, these cards can also be great if you're looking to travel. They can help bring down the cost of some of the major expenses involved in going abroad, such as hotels and flights.
However, to maximise value for money, use them for domestic purchases to earn points, or to book flights in MYR. Once you're actually abroad and making foreign currency purchases, use a specialist card like Wise, which tends to offer a lower-cost alternative to foreign currency conversion with banks like PB.
