If you want to maximise the use of your UOB credit card, you might be thinking about using it when spending abroad. However, the fees you're likely to be charged probably outweigh the benefits you'll receive from points. If you do use it abroad, make sure to activate your card for overseas use before you leave.
When spending overseas, UOB uses the Visa or Mastercard exchange rate, which tends to include an admin charge of up to 1.22%. On top of that, an additional 1% foreign conversion fee is charged by UOB. These can add up rapidly, making it more efficient to use a specialist debit card once you're abroad.
Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate – the one you see on Google – without any FX markup, unlike UOB credit cards, while charging low, transparent fees.
