The Complete Guide to Using Wise with DuitNow in Malaysia
Here's a step-by-step guide to using Wise for DuitNow transactions. Find out how to send MYR to a local ID or scan Alipay+ QR codes from the Wise app.
When sending money through Hong Leong Bank (HLB), Interbank GIRO (IBG) is a common option for scheduled or non-urgent payments. Unlike DuitNow, which is instant¹, IBG transfers are processed in batches. How long your transfer takes depends on when you authorise the payment.
This guide breaks down the HLB IBG transfer schedule, cut-off times, and fees – so you can plan ahead and avoid unexpected delays. We'll also introduce the Wise account, a handy companion to make your money go further with low, transparent fees.

IBG is a batch processing electronic transfer system managed by PayNet². When you transfer funds from an HLB account to another local bank, the money enters a queue. The receiving bank then credits the recipient according to a fixed daily schedule.
Because it doesn't process in real time, IBG is best suited for scheduled bill payments, salary crediting, and loan instalments – situations where immediate arrival isn't required.
To make sure your funds arrive on the same day, you'll need to submit the transfer before 5pm on a working day. Miss a cut-off time, and the transaction simply rolls over to the next processing window.
From Monday to Friday, HLB follows the standard PayNet batch processing schedule³:
| Payment Initiated Time | Funds Received by Beneficiary* | Refund for Unsuccessful Transaction* |
|---|---|---|
| Before 5am | By 11am | By 5pm |
| 5:01am – 8am | By 2pm | By 8:20pm |
| 8:01am – 11am | By 5pm | By 11pm |
| 11:01am – 2pm | By 8:20pm | By 11am (Next business day) |
| 2:01pm – 5pm | By 11pm | By 11am (Next business day) |
| After 5pm | By 11am (Next business day) | By 5pm (Next business day) |
*Under normal circumstances.
IBG transfers only process on business days. If you initiate a transfer on a Saturday, Sunday, or Federal Territory public holiday, HLB will queue the transaction. The receiving bank will then credit the funds by 11am on the next business day.
Beneficiaries will receive future-dated transfers by 11am on the selected date. If that date falls on a weekend or Federal Territory public holiday, the funds will arrive by 11am on the next business day instead.
Because Maybank is part of the same PayNet IBG network, transfers from HLB follow the exact schedule above.
For example, if you send money to a Maybank account at 10am on a Wednesday, the recipient should receive it by 5pm the same day. But if you send it at 8pm on a Friday, the funds likely won’t arrive until 11am the following Monday. The same applies to IBG transfers to banks like Bank Rakyat and BSN.
You can initiate an IBG transfer using either the HLB Connect mobile app or the web portal⁴. The process is straightforward – just make sure you select the correct transfer type, as the system also offers DuitNow for instant transfers.
- Log in to your HLB Connect app, tap on Menu, then tap Transfer.
- Tap New Transfer and select Account Number or type of ID. If you're transferring to a favourite account, select it from your favourites list.
- Enter the recipient details, transfer amount, and any other required information, then tap Next.
- Under Transfer Type, choose Interbank GIRO (IBG) for a delayed transfer. Do not select DuitNow, which is for instant transfers.
- Review your details and tap Ready to Transfer.
- If the transfer is to an account not in your favourites list, you'll receive a 6-digit TAC on your mobile phone. Enter it to complete the transaction.
- Log in to HLB Connect Online Banking and click on Pay & Transact.
- Under the transfer options, select Transfer to Others (for transfers to someone else or your account outside of HLB).
- Enter the fund transfer details and click Next.
- Make sure to choose the correct Transfer Type – select IBG for a delayed transfer (not DuitNow to Account).
- If the transfer is to an account not in your favourites list, you'll receive a 6-digit TAC on your mobile phone. Enter it to complete the transaction.
Here's some good news: Hong Leong Bank charges zero fees for IBG transfers made through its online and mobile banking platforms⁵. That said, small fees apply if you use an ATM or visit a branch.
| Transfer Channel | Processing Fee | Daily Transaction Limit |
|---|---|---|
| HLB Connect Online Banking | Free | Up to RM 50,000 (Combined limit) |
| HLB Connect Mobile Banking | Free | Up to RM 50,000 (Combined limit) |
| ATM | RM 0.10 | RM 5,000 (Combined limit) |
| Over the Counter (Branch) | RM 0.30 (Existing customers) | No limit |
Note: The maximum IBG per-transaction limit is RM 1 million, but this remains subject to your account's combined daily transfer limit.
The short answer: no. Once you authorise an IBG transfer and approve it via AppAuthorise or TAC, you cannot cancel it through HLB Connect.
If you make a mistake — such as sending funds to the wrong account number — you’ll need to contact Hong Leong Bank customer service or visit the nearest branch immediately⁶.
If you need funds to arrive immediately, DuitNow is the better option. But for future-dated or non-urgent payments, IBG remains a reliable choice.
| Feature | Interbank GIRO (IBG) | DuitNow (Instant Transfer) |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Delayed (Batch processing) | Immediate |
| Availability | Business days only | 24/7 (Including weekends and holidays) |
