How long is an Indian passport valid for?

A standard Indian passport is issued with 10 years validity for adults, and 5 years for minors¹. This difference allows for a more frequent update of passport photos for children as they grow.

To travel overseas your passport must be valid, and it must usually be in good condition and have several blank pages for a visa or stamp.

It’s important to know that individual countries may have their own rules on top of these basic standard requirements. In many destinations the remaining passport validity for international travel must be at least six months after the planned departure date.

For this reason, Indians are encouraged to consider renewing their passport early - as much as one year before it expires².

What is the required passport validity for international travel?

Individual countries decide what passport validity should be for international travel. However, it’s common for countries to state that to enter your passport must be valid for six months at the planned end of your trip. This is intended to ensure that visitors do not end up in the country with an expired passport, which may make it impossible for them to leave at the end of their trip.

If you’re planning a trip overseas it’s important to check your passport validity, as well as the rules for your specific destination. If you discover that your passport does not have a full six months to run you can apply for a renewal, or apply for the Tatkaal service to expedite your renewal if your case is urgent³.

How to check your passport validity period

To check how long your passport will remain valid you’ll need to turn to the bio page at the back, and look for the "Date of Expiry".

Remember you’ll need to check the validity to the end date of your trip, not the date you arrived at your destination.

Can you travel if your passport expires in 6 months?

Individual countries set their own rules about how long your passport must have left to run, and so you might find you can take a trip with a passport with less than 6 months validity. However, bear in mind that even if a country allows it, airlines may deny you boarding if your passport has little validity left.

Double check all the rules, and renew your passport if possible to avoid problems at the airport.

Country-specific passport requirements

Let’s look at how some popular destinations manage passport validity requirements for Indian passport holders.

Bear in mind that this list isn’t exhaustive - passport validity rules may also apply based on visa type, and so you’ll have to double check all the rules which apply to your specific visit carefully.

Which countries do not require 6 months of passport validity?

So - where can you travel if your passport expires in 6 months or less? The good news is that you’ll still have options, including places like the US, Canada, UK and much of Europe. However, you’ll need to double check the full rules for your preferred destination based on your visa type as well as your passport validity.

Other possible destinations if you have a relatively short validity on your passport can include Australia which may offer some visitor visas without 6 month validity.

Ultimately countries set their own entry requirements which can change without notice. Check on the destination’s official web resources, such as their Embassy website, to learn more about the rules before you travel.

Keep in mind before your travels
