If you travel often, or plan to move overseas on a long term basis, you may need to get your international driving permit in India before you travel. An international driving permit is a globally recognised document which enables you to drive in other countries legally, and can also be used to hire a vehicle.
In some states you can apply for your international driving permit online, while in others you’ll need to get your international licence at the RTO office closest to your home.
This guide looks at getting an international driving licence in India, for people who hold a valid Indian RTO issued driving licence. We’ll also introduce Wise as a great provider that can be very useful for frequent travelers and those relocating internationally.

An International Driving Permit (IDP)1, which is also frequently referred to as "international driving license" is an international travel document which allows you to drive in a foreign country. It follows a unified template which certifies that you have a valid driving license in the country you usually live in, and is accepted as proof of eligibility to drive in many countries.
Applying for your international driving permit in India before traveling—whether for a short trip or a more permanent relocation—can provide several benefits:
Most countries require visitors to have an IDP, in addition to a valid license from their home country, to prove their eligibility and competence to drive. Different countries accept slightly different versions of the IDP. Some countries may not require an IDP, allowing you to drive with just your Indian Driving Licence.
The International Driving Permit website provides a helpful tool to check if an IDP is required for your intended destination2.
Before applying for an IDP, ensure you have all the necessary documents and information. This process is specifically for holders of a valid Indian driving license who must also be a resident of India at the time of applying.
Usually the requirements to get an international driving permit include3:
The official processing fee for an international driving license in India is 1,000 INR3.
The validity of your International Driving Permit from India might vary based on the destination countries where you plan to use it. Different countries might have their own validity limits and requirements for how long you can use an international license. If you’re permanently relocating, you'll usually be expected to apply for a local licence after a period of time, even if your international driving permit remains valid.
The application process for an international driving license in India can be done online or in person through the RTO (Regional Transport Office). However, it’s important to note that these are very general guides, since the exact process varies from state to state. Check your local state authorities’ information before you proceed.
The option to apply for your international driving permit online is only available in some states. If this service isn’t available in your location, you’ll need to visit your local RTO office where you can make your application. Here’s how to get an international driving permit online where the service is supported. We’ve looked at the information for Delhi as an example4:
You’ll be informed of the next steps once your application is submitted. In many states this is offered as a ‘faceless’ service which means there’s no need to visit the RTO even to collect your license in the end.
If you choose to get your IDP through the Regional Transport Office for your state you’ll need to take along the required documents, including copies, and apply in person. Because the process - including the process for making an appointment - can vary a lot from state to state, you’ll need to confirm exactly what is needed with your local state RTO before you make your application.
If you would rather make the application process as smooth as possible - and don’t mind paying a fee - you can also apply for your IDP using local agents who can help facilitate the process.
Before you select a provider be sure to check if your friends and family have any referrals, and look online for reviews to see what other customers say about your preferred agent. And before you pay, clarify the cost of their services, and what exactly you can expect to receive in return.
If you are overseas and your IDP is lost or stolen, it can be replaced through supported Indian embassies and consulates. Check the service availability in the Indian embassy of country you’re in, to learn more.
