What is a Make My Trip Forex Card?

The MakeMyTrip Forex Card is a prepaid multi-currency travel card that allows Indian travellers to load up to 14 foreign currencies before an international trip.¹ The card can then be used for purchases and ATM withdrawals overseas wherever Visa cards are accepted.

The card is powered by BookMyForex, a MakeMyTrip Group company, in partnership with YES BANK.² Depending on where you purchase or come across the card, you may also see it referred to as:

  • MakeMyTrip Multi Currency Card
  • MMT Forex Card

Is the MakeMyTrip Forex Card safe?

The MakeMyTrip Forex Card is generally safe because it is issued by BookMyForex Pvt. Ltd., a currency exchange provider authorised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in partnership with YES Bank, an RBI-regulated bank.

The card also offers some security features, including chip-and-PIN protection, disposable virtual cards for online transactions, and the ability to freeze and unfreeze the card through the app.

MakeMyTrip Forex Card’s exchange rate

Although the card advertises "zero markup", interbank-linked exchange rates, this benefit generally applies only when loading the card, and only for selected currencies, selected cities, and orders of at least INR 1.5 lakh.

For all other transactions involving currency conversion, the exchange rate will likely include a spread, which effectively acts as a hidden fee.

According to the card's Terms and Conditions, here's how it works:

  • If you spend in one of the 14 supported currencies but don't have enough balance in that currency, BookMyForex will convert funds from another currency wallet using a rate decided by BookMyForex.
  • If you spend in a currency that isn't supported, Visa converts the transaction into a supported currency using the Visa exchange rate.

A 3.5% cross-currency conversion fee also applies when you use the card for transactions that require currency conversion.

The table below compares the initial cost of purchasing and loading 100 USD onto the MakeMyTrip Forex Card and Wise Travel card:

Summary: Is the MakeMyTrip Forex Card good for travelling?

The MakeMyTrip Forex Card can be a reasonable option for travellers visiting a country that uses one of its 14 supported currencies, provided they load that currency in advance and spend primarily in it.

However, the card offers no free ATM withdrawals, and for those visiting multiple countries or spending in currencies they don't hold, the service fees, exchange rate markups, and 3.5% cross-currency fee can quickly add up.

For travellers who want access to more currencies, lower conversion fees, and the real interbank exchange rate, an alternative like the Wise Travel card may offer better value.

Pros Cons
  • Supports 14 currencies in one card
  • No annual fee
  • App-based card management
  • Virtual cards available
  • 3.5% cross-currency fee when spending in a currency you don't hold
  • ATM withdrawal fees (2% + fixed fee)
  • Exchange rates may include a spread set by BookMyForex or Visa
  • Delivery not available everywhere in India
