SWIFT transfer from France: fees, processing times, setup
Everything you need to know about Swift transfers: how to make a transfer? What are the costs? How can you save on transfers abroad?
Here's an overview of what Banque Populaire offers its customers in France for making international transfers. The rates and timeframes presented are examples and vary depending on the destination country, the channels used, and the Banque Populaire institution.
We'll also discuss alternative providers, such as Wise, which Banque Populaire has partnered with to offer its individual customers a digital and accessible international transfer service.
Banque Populaire customers can now send money internationally via Wise, using the Banque Populaire mobile app.
These transfers operated by Wise are carried out according to their pricing conditions, which are designed to be as attractive as possible and without any hidden exchange rate markup.
For example, if you want to send €1,000 to a dollar-denominated account in the US, with Wise, it will cost you only €6.21.
| Provider | Commission | Exchange rate | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise | 0.62% | Mid-market exchange rate | €6.21 |
Banque Populaire is expanding its offering to cover needs and uses that Wise could ideally meet.
Wise complements Banque Populaire's offering, which is more suited to larger transfers or to transfer currencies not offered by Wise.
The rates shown throughout this article come from the official Banque Populaire Rives de Paris website and were compared in the first part to the costs provided by the Wise calculator on June 6, 2025. The exchange rate and fees applied may change according to individual agreements between the bank and its customers.
We have used the rates applied by Banque Populaire Rives de Paris as an example.
Here is a summary of the fees:¹
| Transfer type | In branch | Online |
|---|---|---|
| Standard transfer | * To a Banque Populaire account: Free * Otherwise: €6.00 | Free |
| Instant transfer | - | Free |
Receiving SEPA transfers is completely free.¹
Here's an overview of the fees:¹
| Fee Type | Fees |
|---|---|
| Issuing Fee | * 0.06% (min. €13.15, max. €165) * For paper orders: €5.45 |
In addition, there is a foreign exchange fee applied proportionally to the transfer amount:¹
| Amount | Foreign Exchange Fee |
|---|---|
| ≤ €80,000 | 0.05% (min. €15.40) |
| Over €80,000 | 0.025% additional |
This fee also applies to receiving transfers.¹
Receiving a foreign currency transfer incurs a fee of €18.80, plus the exchange rate mentioned above.¹
Note that the actual exchange rate applied can therefore have a direct impact on the transfer fee.
However, there are alternative international transfer operators that offer international remittance services, such as Wise, with which Banque Populaire has a partnership. These providers avoid complex processes and intermediary fees. They use the mid-market exchange rate, which can be easily verified with a simple online currency conversion tool. They charge lower fees than banks, with complete transparency. Wise limits money transfers to supported territories, eliminating many additional fees.
If you plan to receive an international transfer or send one through your Banque Populaire account and have any questions regarding the transaction, please contact the financial institution directly.
Banque Populaire now offers its customers two services for making international transfers. These can be made online, using the dedicated Cyberplus system, or in-branch, with the receptionist or their personal advisor. A Wise integration can also be used directly from the Banque Populaire app.
Banque Populaire provides an online space called Cyberplus, allowing you to access and manage your accounts from any digital device connected to the web. The Cyberplus Premium version has recently allowed international transfers.
Log in with your personal credentials.
Add the beneficiary if they are not already registered, via the successive menus "My Transactions", "Transfers", "Manage my beneficiaries", then "Create".
Once the beneficiary has been added, simply return to the "My Transactions" menu, then to the "Transfers" menu.
Select the debit account, the one from which the funds are being withdrawn, then the previously added recipient account.
Enter the amount, currency, and date of the transfer.
Confirm the transaction.
Banque Populaire offers additional security features for online transactions via the Sécur'Pass solution, which is completely free and can be activated by any Banque Populaire customer.
To make your international transfer at a Banque Populaire branch, you can choose the branch that best suits your needs: near your home, your workplace, or the one where your accounts are held. All branch addresses in the Banque Populaire network are listed on the bank's website.
If you visit a branch, you can speak to your advisor or the receptionist. You will need to present a valid ID, your Banque Populaire account number, and the recipient's bank account details (RIB).
That said, a branch isn't the preferred channel. Rather, it's there to help you out or support you if you have a specific need that you can't handle online.
With Wise there's no need to visit a branch; everything is done online using the mobile app.
To make an international transfer, you must provide:
The bank account details (RIB) of the foreign individual or professional receiving the transfer.
This RIB must be in the form of an IBAN, the international identification number of the recipient account, which appears as a long string of numbers, up to 34.
This document must also include the SWIFT or BIC code designating the recipient bank, between 8 and 11 characters long.
The recipient's identity and address must also be indicated.
The amount, the chosen currency, and the expected transfer deadline.
To receive funds from abroad into your Banque Populaire account, you must have the following information:
Your Banque Populaire RIB.
This document must include your account number in the internationally recognized format: the IBAN, as well as the SWIFT (or BIC) code designating Banque Populaire.
You must also indicate the desired currency, the amount, and the expected transfer deadline.
Banque Populaire allows international transfers to two distinct destination zones, with different transfer times.
Banque Populaire international transfers to the SEPA zone, denominated in euros, are processed within 48 hours maximum.² However, the varying business hours of the receiving banks may cause this time to vary slightly.
If the receiving bank accepts Instant Payment transfers, then transfers in euros to accounts at these banks are completed in just 10 seconds.²
All non-SEPA countries constitute the second zone considered. Banque Populaire does not provide a specific processing time for these transfers, as this varies depending on the currency, the destination country, the intermediary banks' terms and conditions, currency conversion procedures, and transaction validation processes.
Wise allows you to send money abroad. It only takes a few minutes to create an account. You then send the money to the platform, which transfers it to the recipient you have indicated.
Here are the steps to make an international bank transfer with Wise:
Log in to your Wise account.
Create a transfer from the home page by clicking on "Send money".
Enter the source/receipt currencies, the amount, and the transfer type ("fast", "low cost", "easy").
In the next step, enter the recipient's details (IBAN or local bank account number).
Verify that all information is correct.
Confirm your payment.
Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate, which is easily verified with its online currency converter. They charge clearly stated fees with no hidden surcharges.
