Let's take a closer look.
We will also present the Wise card, a multicurrency debit card that allows you to spend in +40 currencies, always converting your money at the mid-market exchange rate without mark-ups.

A Revolut virtual card is a payment card that has no physical form, only a digital one. Therefore, you can only use it for online purchases, or contactless payments: directly in stores using digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
What is it good for?
☝️ A virtual card is different from an electronic card, which is a digital version of your physical card. Virtual cards are issued purely digitally and have never been – and cannot be – delivered to you physically.
You can use your virtual card immediately after creating it, and you can also delete it at any time. Just like a regular card, it has its own 16-digit number, expiry date, and CVC code. You can use it to pay online and in stores via Apple Pay or Google Pay.¹
In the Czech Republic, Revolut offers two types of virtual cards: a multi-use card and a disposable card.² The first type essentially functions like a regular payment card, as it has permanent details until you cancel it. Therefore, you can easily use it for recurring payments or frequent purchases from a single merchant.
In contrast, a disposable virtual card generates its details only for a specific transaction. After the payment is made, the details are immediately deleted, and new ones are generated for the next payment. This ensures an extra layer of security.
You can create a card for free in just a few seconds directly within the Revolut app. The exact steps are as follows³:
If you're paying for goods or services online and don't want to share your physical card details, enter the details of your digital card. This includes the 16-digit number, expiry date, and CVC code. You can view these details in the app under the "Cards" section by selecting "View details."⁴
You can add your virtual card to a digital wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay and pay with it from your device in a store. It's a standard contactless payment – all you need is for the business to have a payment terminal.
If you want to withdraw cash from your Revolut account, a virtual card won't help you. It's designed only for online and contactless payments. Unfortunately, you cannot withdraw cash from an ATM with it.¹ This rule applies to both multi-use and disposable cards.
Of course. You can pay with a virtual card anywhere, just like a regular card. Revolut is particularly well-suited for international payments because it allows you to hold funds in 38 currencies⁵. For exchanges between them, it offers a better rate than standard banks. Most banks typically add a 2–4% markup to the mid-market rate.
While Revolut doesn't use the exact mid-market rate, it comes close. For example, compare the cost of 200 EUR with cards from Česká spořitelna, Moneta, Revolut, and Wise, which uses the mid-market rate.
| Cost per 1 EUR | Cost for 200 EUR | |
|---|---|---|
| Česká spořitelna⁶ | 24.998 CZK | 5,000 CZK |
| MONETA Money Bank⁷ | 25.080 CZK | 5,016 CZK |
| Revolut⁸ | 24.334 CZK | 4,870 CZK |
| Wise (mid-market rate) | 24.260 CZK | 4,851 CZK |
✈️ Are you already abroad, but would like to avoid extra fees and pay at the mid-market rate? You don't have to wait for the Wise card to arrive in the mail. Just order it and the virtual card is ready to be activated in your wallet.

This also applies to the Wise physical card.

You can link up to 20 active virtual cards to your Revolut account, with a maximum of 4 cards created within a 30-day period.⁹ For disposable cards, you can only have one at a time.
And how much does a Revolut virtual card cost? Nothing. You can create one for free.¹⁰
You don't need to do anything other than have funds in your Revolut account. The virtual card is directly linked to your account, just like a regular payment card. So, when paying online, simply enter and possibly save its details, or "pull it up" from your digital wallet – this applies to payments at a merchant's terminal too. You can then view the transactions you've made with the virtual card in the app.
Here are some specific examples of when a virtual card is useful:
Now you know how and why to use a virtual card. Getting one is a breeze: just a few clicks in the app, and you're ready to start paying. If you want the fairest rate for international payments, opt for a Wise virtual card.
