Find out how much a full-service foreign payment costs with Fio, how to make it step by step, and why you need to know the exchange rate.
Do you need to make a large money transfer and are you not sure about your bank's maximum sending limit? In this article, you’ll learn about the maximum transfer amounts at the most popular Czech banks. You'll discover how much money you can send, how quickly your payment will travel, and what the limits are for ATM withdrawals or card payments.
You can send up to 25 million at once with a Wise account. You'll particularly appreciate it for international transfers, which can be more cost-effective compared to traditional banks. Wise uses the mid-market rate without any markup. And the best part? You can open and hold an account for free.
Most banks set transfer limits based on two factors: the method of initiating the payment and the type of payment. You'll have the highest limit when paying with the most secure verification method, which for most banks is a digital key. The maximum transfer amount for instant payments is lower than for traditional ones. The following table shows the specific figures.
| Bank | Traditional transfer limit | Instant payment limit |
|---|---|---|
| Air Bank | Unlimited¹ | 50 thousand CZK (and 400 thousand CZK to accounts you frequently pay)² |
| Česká spořitelna | 10 million CZK³ | 400 thousand CZK⁴ |
| ČSOB | Unlimited⁵ | 2.5 million CZK⁶ |
| Fio banka | No limit⁷ | 100 thousand CZK⁸ |
| Komerční banka | 10 million CZK⁹ | 400 thousand CZK¹⁰ |
| mBank | Unlimited¹¹ | 400 thousand CZK¹² |
| MONETA Money Bank | 2 million CZK¹³ | 400 thousand CZK¹⁴ |
| Raiffeisenbank | 2.5 million CZK¹⁵ | 400 thousand CZK¹⁶ |
| UniCredit Bank | 2 million CZK¹⁷ | 1 million CZK¹⁸ |

💡 Need to send money abroad? For international payments, the limit is usually the same as for domestic ones, just converted to the foreign currency. Currently, you can only make instant payments in CZK and in a few banks in EUR – for example, with Fio¹⁹ and UniCredit.¹⁸
With a Wise account, you can securely transfer up to 25 million CZK at once. You can choose from over 40+ currencies. International payments will be more cost-effective not only due to low fees but mainly because of the mid-market exchange rate. Traditional banks mark up this rate, meaning you pay more than you need to. You can hold a Wise account for free and get a debit card and a virtual card. What are your limits?
| Payment method | Limit |
|---|---|
| Online transfer | 25 million CZK per day |
| Card payment at a merchant | 30,000 EUR per month |
| Online card payment | 30,000 EUR per month |
| ATM withdrawal | 4,000 EUR per month |
Limits are usually preset on your account to a lower value than the maximum transfer amount. You can change these limits directly in your online or mobile banking for each bank. If you plan to transfer an amount larger than your maximum limit allows, you will need to visit a branch in person.
If you stay within the instant payment limit, the money will reach the recipient's account in seconds.⁸ If you are sending more, a traditional domestic payment should arrive by the end of the next business day – regardless of the amount being transferred.¹⁸
💸 Sending money abroad or in foreign currency? A SEPA payment arrives by the next business day at the latest.²⁰ However, it's different for a SWIFT payment that can take anywhere from two days to two weeks – depending on the currencies, countries, and intermediary banks. There is no legally set deadline.
Instant payment transfers are free for the vast majority of Czech banks.
What if you're paying by card? Each bank sets different card payment limits. They often distinguish between payments at a merchant and online payments. Sometimes this limit is combined for both types of payments, and you must stay within the total. Other times, each payment type has its own limit. The following table shows how your bank handles this.
