Now, scroll back up to the first comparison. How is it possible that when transferring 20,000 CZK, you receive a different amount in euros with ČSOB compared to Wise?

The reason is the mid-market rate. This is the rate similar to the one you'll find on Google. Other banks only use it for transactions among themselves. They typically add a markup of 2%–4% for clients, which in this case results in a difference of over 20 EUR.

ČSOB euro account – cash withdrawals

Imagine this scenario: You've opened a euro account with ČSOB, transferred your money, and headed off on vacation with peace of mind. However, in many local shops, cards aren't accepted, and you need cash. You go to the nearest ATM to withdraw some. How much will this cost you?

If the ATM is operated by a bank belonging to the KBC Group, which ČSOB is part of, it will cost you 5 CZK. Besides ČSOB in Slovakia, this group includes KBC Brussels and CBC in Belgium, K&H Hungary in Hungary, and UBB Bulgaria in Bulgaria.

If the ATM is operated by a completely different bank, but it's still located within the EU or its contractual states – Switzerland, Monaco, Andorra, and Vatican City – you'll pay 40 CZK. If you withdraw cash outside the EU and the aforementioned 4 countries, prepare for a flat fee of 100 CZK.

You can also withdraw cash at a ČSOB branch. This will cost you 150 CZK. Plus, you will pay an extra 1% of the withdrawn amount if you want cash in a currency other than the one your account is held in.¹
