How Air Bank International Payments Work

🔍 Take a quick look at an example: You're sending 1,200 EUR from your CZK account to a Slovak account in EUR. How much will you pay in CZK for the transfer with Air Bank, and how much does it cost with Wise?

ProviderAmount Paid (incl. fee)¹Exchange Rate 1 EUR
Air Bank30,084 CZK25.07 CZK²
Wise29,256 CZK24.266 CZK

Data valid as of the article's writing date.

In this example, an Air Bank payment to Slovakia is 828 CZK more expensive than with a Wise account. The reason is the exchange rate. Air Bank has its own rate, while Wise uses the mid-market rate, which is determined by central banks. You'll learn why this is disadvantageous further in the article.

Air Bank International Payments – Fees

How much you pay for an international transfer with Air Bank depends on where and in what currency you're sending the money.¹

Air Bank Euro Payments within SEPA

SEPA payments are free with Air Bank. This means if you're sending money in euros within the SEPA zone, which includes countries in the European Economic Area, you won't pay anything. This is common practice at most Czech banks.

Air Bank International Payments

All other payments, whether outside the EEA or in a currency other than EUR, cost 100 CZK with Air Bank.¹ In this regard, Air Bank is more of a bright exception compared to other Czech banks. Most banks charge a percentage fee based on the amount sent, with a minimum of around 200 CZK.

Air Bank Exchange Rate – Another Important Factor

The Air Bank exchange rate is even more important than Air Bank's fees. When you send money from your CZK account, your Czech korunas need to be converted into a foreign currency along the way. This conversion happens at Air Bank's exchange rate, which the bank sets to profit from the exchange. This is common banking practice. That's why the Air Bank exchange rate differs from the mid-market rate determined by national banks. It includes a markup.

Air Bank – How to Send Money Abroad

You now know the cost of an international payment, and it's time to cover how to actually send it. It's good to know that you can only send SEPA payments from the Air Bank mobile banking app. All other international transfers must be made through internet banking.

First, you'll need the recipient's bank details in international format – IBAN (International Bank Account Number) and BIC/SWIFT code. For a SEPA payment, the IBAN should suffice along with the name, and Air Bank will automatically determine the BIC. For other transfers, additional information might be required, such as the recipient's or their bank's address. Air Bank will indicate what's mandatory during the payment process.³

Step-by-Step Guide

In Internet Banking:

  • In the top menu, click on "Payments."
  • Select the option "International or SEPA Payment."
  • Enter the recipient's account number in IBAN format, their bank's BIC/SWIFT code, and choose the currency. Click "Continue."
  • If necessary, Air Bank will ask for further details. Fill them in and proceed.
  • Review everything in the payment summary and confirm sending.

In the Mobile App:

  • Click on "Menu."
  • Then select the "Payment Options" tab.
  • Click on the "SEPA Payment" option.
  • Fill in the required details and confirm the payment.³

Incoming Payments from Abroad – How to Receive Them

If you're expecting a payment from abroad, simply provide the sender with all the necessary details. They will definitely want your IBAN and BIC/SWIFT code. Depending on where the payment is being sent from, they might request additional information. Air Bank's BIC/SWIFT code is AIRACZPP. Wondering where to find your Air Bank IBAN?

  • In internet banking, select "Accounts and Cards" from the menu, click on "Options," and then choose "Account Details."
  • In the mobile app, click on your account in the "Smart Overview," expand the three dots in the top right corner, and select "Account Information."⁴

☝️ You pay 100 CZK for international incoming payments. Receiving SEPA payments is free.¹ Foreign currency will be converted to CZK at Air Bank's selling rate. Therefore, expect a certain loss.

Air Bank International Payments – Speed

How long it takes for your payment to reach the recipient again depends on where and in what currency you’re sending it. SEPA payments should arrive the next business day. Other international payments may take longer, up to a maximum of 14 days. However, such delays should be exceptions.³

You've now learned everything about how Air Bank international payments work.
Remember that you can only initiate SEPA payments from your mobile. And don't forget to check the exchange rate before sending a payment. If you want a fair market rate, you know that a Wise account is the solution.
