Choosing an international money transfer service in Canada can feel confusing when pricing and exchange rates aren't always easy to compare. Lemfi and Wise both offer digital ways to send money abroad, but differ when it comes to fees, exchange rates, transfer speed, and coverage.

When comparing international money transfer services, exchange rates and fees play a major role in determining how much money actually reaches the recipient. Some providers build their costs into the exchange rate, while others separate the rate from the fee.
Lemfi supports international money transfers from Canada to 30+ countries¹, with funds converted at the point of transfer rather than held in a Canadian multi-currency account. While Lemfi offers multi-currency wallets and Global Accounts to customers in Nigeria, Canadian users mainly use the service for outbound transfers rather than holding foreign currencies.
When you send money or convert funds within the app, Lemfi applies an exchange rate that includes a markup on the rate it receives from wholesale currency markets.² Transfer fees vary by destination, and in some corridors there may be no separate transfer fee, which can partly offset the exchange rate markup. The exchange rate and any applicable fees are always shown in the app before you confirm the transfer.
Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate, which is the exchange rate you see on global currency markets, without adding a markup to the rate itself. Instead, Wise charges a separate conversion fee, which starts from a low 0.48%³, depending on the currency pair and payment method.
All fees are displayed clearly before you send or convert money, so you can see the total cost upfront. By separating the exchange rate from the fee and avoiding built-in markups, Wise makes it easier to understand what you are paying and compare the cost of transfers accurately.
| Feature | Lemfi | Wise |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange rate | Uses an exchange rate that includes a markup on the wholesale rate² | Uses the mid-market exchange rate with no markup added to the rate |
| Fees | Transfer fees are destination-specific. In some corridors, there may be low or no transfer fees | Low, transparent conversion fees starting from 0.48%³ |
| International coverage | Available to users in Canada, the UK, the US and specific countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. Send transfers to 30+ countries | Hold and exchange 40+ currencies, send money to 140++ countries and receive local account details in multiple currencies |
| Transfer speed | Transfers are described as completing within minutes, depending on the destination and payment route | Many transfers arrive in seconds or the same day |
| Tracking your transfer | Lemfi provides basic transfer status updates within the app | Built-in tracking with detailed updates. You can see when Wise receives your money, sends it out, and when it is expected to arrive |
When choosing a money transfer service, speed often matters just as much as cost. How quickly funds arrive usually depends on the provider's own processing times, the receiving bank or wallet, and how the transfer is funded.
Lemfi describes many of its transfers as close to instant, with funds often arriving within minutes. Once a transfer shows as successful in the app, the money is sent on to the recipient's bank or mobile money account.
In some cases, a transfer may appear complete on Lemfi's side, but the recipient's bank or mobile money provider may take a little longer to apply the funds. When this happens, the delay is usually down to the receiving institution rather than Lemfi itself. If this happens, the platform recommends allowing some time for the recipient's provider to finish processing before submitting a support request.⁴
Wise transfers are also fast, with most payments arriving in seconds, especially when sending from an existing Wise balance. Other transfers typically arrive within one business day, though some can take a few working days depending on the payment method, destination bank, and any required security checks.
Before you send, Wise shows an estimated delivery time and keeps that estimate updated in your account. Card payments tend to be the fastest, while bank transfers can take longer, especially if sent outside banking hours or over weekends and holidays.
Both Lemfi and Wise operate as regulated financial services providers and include safeguards designed to protect user funds and personal information.
The platform is licensed and recognised by financial regulators in the countries where it operates, including registration with FINTRAC in Canada⁵, which means it must meet local regulatory and compliance requirements.
To protect accounts, Lemfi uses security measures such as identity verification with government-issued ID, encrypted login credentials, and one-time passwords. The platform also shares guidance to help users avoid fraud, including warnings about phishing attempts, unsolicited links, and requests for login details.
For Canadian customers, wallet funding is handled through Interac, which helps reduce the risk of misdirected deposits. Transfer updates and transaction details are available in the app, although there is no publicly documented detail about step-by-step tracking compared with some other providers.
Wise is regulated in multiple countries and operates under local financial authorities in Canada and other regions where it provides services, with more than 65 licences worldwide.⁶ Customer money is safeguarded in line with regulatory requirements and kept separate from Wise's own funds.
Rather than lending out customer balances, Wise holds funds in cash or secure, liquid assets such as government bonds and money market funds, alongside established banking partners. This approach is designed to keep customer money accessible, even during periods of market disruption.
Security features include two-step authentication, encryption, biometric login options, and real-time notifications. Transfers can be tracked in detail through the Wise app or website, showing when money is sent, received, and expected to arrive. If delays occur, Wise updates the delivery estimate so users know what's happening.

Choosing between Lemfi and Wise depends on where you're sending money and how often you need to do it.
Lemfi can work well for Canadians who need to send money to one of its supported destinations in over 30+ countries across Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe. Transfers are often fast, usually arriving within minutes, and fees can be low on certain routes. That said, transfers are limited to specific destinations, and key features like Global Accounts are only available to Nigerian customers.
Wise is better suited to Canadians who want broader flexibility. You can open a multi-currency account, hold and exchange 40+ currencies, and send money to over 160 countries. Transfers use the mid-market exchange rate with fees shown upfront, making costs easier to compare and plan around. For regular, multi-country, or higher-value transfers, Wise offers more choice and a long-term setup.
