Instarem vs Wise : What is your better option in Canada?
Is Instarem or Wise your better choice in Canada? Read on to find out more
If you’re an NRI in Canada looking to send money to India, you may come across Abound. While it’s popular in the US, Abound isn’t designed for Canadian residents, so CAD–INR transfers aren’t supported. The good news is that there are plenty of Canada-available alternatives, including banks, Indian institutions with local branches, and digital transfer services.
Below, we break down each option so you can see what works best for how you send money and how your recipient prefers to receive it. We'll also introduce Wise, your international money transfer alternative. Use Wise to send stress-free transfers to 140+ countries - all at the fair mid-market exchange rate.
Abound is designed for Indians living in the United States, with its money transfer features focused on sending funds to India and managing India-based expenses like family bill payments. It’s positioned as an all-in-one app for US-based NRIs rather than a global money transfer service.
That’s where it becomes an issue for NRIs in Canada. Abound doesn’t support Canadian residency or CAD-funded transfers, so its money transfer features aren’t available from Canada. It’s also limited to India-only transfers, which can feel restrictive if you ever need to send money elsewhere. If you’re sending money from a Canadian account, you’ll need an alternative that supports Canada-to-India transfers and offers more flexibility when needed.
If you’re sending money from Canada to India, the main alternatives to Abound fall into two familiar categories:
Most bank transfers from Canada to India are sent via SWIFT, which means you’ll usually need the recipient’s bank name, account number, and SWIFT/BIC code. Some banks also offer app-based international transfers, though coverage and pricing vary.
Below is a snapshot of how major Canadian banks compare, including what it can cost to access money in India using a debit card.
| Bank | Transfer fees | ATM and card payment fees in India |
|---|---|---|
| RBC1,2 | 0 CAD transfer fees for RBC International Money Transfer. Send up to 50,000 CAD/day | Debit cash withdrawals outside of North America are typically 5 CAD per withdrawal, plus any local ATM operator fees |
| CIBC3,4 | CIBC Global Money Transfer offers 0 CAD transfer fees, with delivery methods depending on the destination | Non-CIBC ATM withdrawals outside Canada and the US: 5 CAD + 2.5% administration fee, plus any local ATM fees |
| Desjardins5,6 | International transfers are generally sent via SWIFT, typically around 15 CAD per transfer, depending on the destination and setup | Withdrawals at non-Desjardins ATMs outside Canada are usually 5 CAD per withdrawal, plus possible operator fees |
| National Bank of Canada7,8 | Online international transfer: 5.95 CAD per transaction. SWIFT wire in branch: 0.34% commission (min 20 CAD, max 70 CAD) + wire charges (20 CAD for countries outside Canada/US) | International ATM withdrawals are typically 5 CAD per transaction, plus any fees charged by the local ATM operator |
Canadian banks are a reliable option if you’re comfortable with SWIFT transfers and occasional higher fees. But for NRIs sending money regularly to India, or accessing funds on the ground, ATM charges and exchange-rate spreads can quickly become costly, which is why many people also look at specialist transfer providers or fintech options.
Some NRIs prefer to bank with familiar institutions that are closely tied to India’s domestic banking system. Indian banks with a presence in Canada are set up specifically for remittances to India, and once a transfer leaves Canada, it’s typically routed through India’s local clearing systems such as IMPS, NEFT, or RTGS. It can be a good fit if your priority is reliable delivery to Indian bank accounts rather than broader international coverage.
Money2India is ICICI Bank Canada’s remittance service for sending funds from Canada to India. Transfers can be initiated online, in the mobile app, over the phone, or at a branch, and recipients do not need to bank with ICICI in India.
How funds are delivered: Depending on the recipient bank and route selected, transfers may be credited quickly using India’s domestic payment systems. ICICI states it generally processes transfer requests within 48 hours, with final delivery timing also influenced by the receiving bank.10
Fees:9
No transfer fee when sending to India from a HiVALUE PLUS Chequing Account.
Around 5 CAD for online transfers from several other ICICI personal accounts.
Around 10 CAD if the same transfers are initiated via branch or call centre.
For non-account holders, transfers are typically priced at 20 CAD per transaction, with lower maximum amounts allowed.
Debit card: Using an ICICI debit card outside Canada can involve international ATM charges and a foreign exchange margin (around 2.5%), in addition to any fees set by the local ATM operator.
SBI Canada Bank offers India-bound remittances through its YONO SBICA mobile app and Internet Banking, with a strong emphasis on INR transfers.
How funds are delivered: Money can be sent to accounts at State Bank of India or to other Indian banks. Some transfers may be credited instantly, depending on the receiving bank’s capabilities.
Digital transfer limits: SBI lists a maximum of 20,000 CAD (or equivalent) per transfer when using the app or online banking. Larger amounts or additional currencies are handled through branch services.11
Fees:12
No fee for INR transfers made through the YONO SBICA mobile app by account holders.
Around 4.50 CAD for INR transfers made online.
Around 10 CAD when the transfer is initiated at a branch.
If your recipient would rather collect cash than receive a bank deposit, there are international money transfer services that support cash pickup across India. Most use wide agent networks and offer multiple ways to pay from Canada, but pricing can change depending on your payment method and how the funds are picked up.
| Service provider | Transfer limits | Card available ? |
|---|---|---|
| Western Union13 | Online from Canada: Up to 5,000 CAD when paying by bank account or debit/credit card; up to 7,500 CAD when you start online and pay at an agent location. In person: You can usually send any amount, though larger transfers may require additional information. | No |
| Ria14 | A daily sending limit up to 3,000 CAD | No |
| MoneyGram15 | Limits depend on your verification level, payment type, and receive method. You’ll see your sending limit during the transfer process. | No |
| Remitly16 | Up to 140,000 CAD per transfer | No |
Fee-free promotions can be appealing, but they don’t always tell the full story. With cash-pickup services, part of the cost is often reflected in the exchange rate rather than the transfer fee itself.
Providers like Western Union and MoneyGram explain that both fees and exchange rates change based on payment type and payout method, with the final rate shown before you confirm. Remitly also notes that promotional FX rates apply to specific payment methods or first transfers and can change over time.
A practical way to compare options is to use the same test transfer, for example 1,000 CAD, select the same delivery method, and then compare the INR amount your recipient would receive after fees and the displayed exchange rate.
Fintech platforms are often the most flexible option for NRIs in Canada. They’re built for online-first transfers and let you manage everything through an app. Some also go beyond transfers, offering multi-currency accounts or debit cards for everyday spending. As always, costs vary by provider, payment method, and corridor, so it’s worth checking the full breakdown before confirming.
| Service Provider | Transfer fees | Card available ? |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal17 | International personal transfers: 4.99 CAD when funded from a PayPal balance or bank account (outside the US/Europe). Card-funded payments cost 4.99 CAD + 2.90% + a fixed fee. Currency conversion typically adds a 4% markup on the exchange rate | No |
| Wise18 | Low, transparent fees starting from around 0.48%, shown upfront. Uses the mid-market exchange rate with no markup | Yes (physical & virtual) |
| Instarem19 | From 0.4% per transfer. Fees and rates vary by amount, currency, payment method, and destination, with costs shown upfront before you confirm | No |
| RemitBee20 | Fees depend on the payment method. e-Transfer and EFT are free over 500 CAD. Transfers under 500 CAD usually cost 2.99 CAD. Debit card transfers are faster but can cost 2.99 CAD-8.99 CAD, depending on the amount | No |
Why people choose fintechs: clearer pricing than banks, faster setup, and the ability to track transfers in real time. If you’re sending money regularly or juggling CAD and INR alongside other currencies, fintech providers tend to offer more control and fewer surprises than traditional bank wires.
For Canadians and NRIs based in Canada, Wise removes Remit2Any's main limitation: it's available to Canadian residents and isn't restricted to US-to-India transfers.
Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate for CAD–INR transfers, meaning there's no markup built into the rate. Instead, you pay a clearly shown conversion fee, often starting from around 0.48%¹⁸ depending on how you pay. Before you send, Wise shows the fee, the exchange rate, and exactly how many INR your recipient will receive.
From Canada, you can send CAD directly to Indian bank accounts, with delivery times shown upfront. Limits vary by payment method, but Wise supports both smaller, regular transfers and larger one-off payments.
With a Wise account, you can:
A Wise account also includes a debit card, available in both physical and virtual versions. You can spend online or in person in 150+ countries, with Wise automatically converting currencies at the mid-market rate using the same transparent fees. There are no monthly fees, and registration and holding money in your account is free.
Wise fees at a glance (Canada)
| Fee type | Wise pricing¹⁸ |
|---|---|
| Account opening | Free |
| Monthly fees | None |
| Currency conversion | Low fees, starting from 0.48% |
| CAD → INR transfers | Mid-market rate + transparent fee |
| ATM withdrawals | Up to 350 CAD per month free (up to two withdrawals), then 1.50 CAD per withdrawal + 1.75% on amounts over 350 CAD |
Abound can work well for Indians living in the US who only need to send money to India, but that focus makes it less practical for NRIs based in Canada or anyone who needs flexibility beyond a single corridor.
For NRIs in Canada, the main alternatives fall into a few clear categories. Canadian banks offer familiarity, but often rely on SWIFT transfers, layered fees, and less clarity around exchange rates. Indian banks with branches in Canada are built for INR transfers and suit India-first needs, though they’re typically tied to specific accounts and transfer limits. Cash-based transfer services add convenience for recipients who prefer pickup, but costs can vary depending on promotions and the exchange rate applied at checkout.
Wise sits slightly differently. It supports CAD-funded transfers from Canada, uses the mid-market exchange rate, and shows fees upfront. It also works beyond India, making it useful if your needs change or expand over time. For NRIs who want predictable pricing, clear costs, and flexibility without relying on promotions, Wise can be a reliable long-term alternative to Abound.
