Revolut eSIM¹ plans allow you to stay connected when you travel, with country, region and global service options to buy data without needing to use your own telco’s roaming. This can be cheaper than relying on your normal plan - and much more convenient than using public wifi while you’re on the road.

This Revolut eSIM review looks at the way the service works, the coverage and data packages available, and how to learn more about Revolut eSIM pricing based on your specific needs. We'll also introduce to you Wise Travel Card that can help you save on international transactions with currency conversions at mid-market exchange rates.

What is Revolut eSIM?

A Revolut eSIM is an electronic SIM which uses technology built into your phone to allow you to stay connected overseas without running up large roaming bills.

ESIMs are available from a range of specialist providers and can be bought digitally and activated through an app. Once active your plan will work overseas so you can avoid using your normal phone plan which can be a very expensive choice.

Revolut eSIMs are available on a single country, regional or global basis. Pricing varies depending on the coverage, data amount and duration you need. Plans offer data only, not voice calls or SMS. However, for many travellers this is enough, as you can use data to call loved ones instead of placing a normal voice call, through a service like WhatsApp. Another nice perk with the Revolut eSIM is that you can keep access to the Revolut app even without data. Say your data runs out mid-trip, you’ll still be able to log back into Revolut to check your balance and buy a new eSIM plan, even with no wifi or roaming.

Revolut eSIM supported devices

Most newer phone models from major providers are eSIM compatible, but older phone models might not be. Your device also needs to be carrier-unlocked to use a Revolut eSIM.

There’s a full list of eSIM-compatible devices in the Revolut Help Centre which lets you check if your device is likely to be supported for eSIMs⁵.

Summary: Is Revolut eSIM Good?

The Revolut eSIM has a pretty good reputation among users. It’s convenient in that you don’t need to download another eSIM specific app and can manage purchase and activation from within the Revolut app you’re already using. Online commentators suggest coverage is generally solid, particularly in cities, and you can get help from the Revolut service team in app 24/7.

There are a couple of possible downsides to consider. Firstly the packages are sold on a pre-set duration, which means you may need to buy extra days you don't need if you’re not away for the exact period your SIM is available for. Say you’re away for 10 days - you may well need to buy two 7 day packages to cover this, leading to unused days. Some other providers offer packages you can custom make to any length, which can help avoid this issue.

You can also set an auto renew feature with Revolut which triggers an automatic purchase or a new eSIM if you run out of data. This is convenient, but may mean your phone automatically buys another SIM even if you’re about to head home, which can mean spending more than you expect or need to.

Ultimately whether the Revolut eSIM is right for you will depend on your priorities. Here are a few pros and cons to consider:

Revolut eSIM pros Revolut eSIM cons
  • Good range of single country, regional and global plan options
  • Varying data amount and duration plans available for each country/region
  • Can be cheaper and more convenient compared to using your roaming
  • Access the Revolut app even when you run out of data
  • Variable fees and pricing you can only check in app
  • Pre-set package duration may mean you have to buy days you don’t need
  • Not every country globally is covered
  • Auto-renew tools can be expensive if you’re automatically signed up to a new plan just before your trip ends

Revolut is among a range of providers which offer eSIM products, and can be a convenient choice as you can manage your SIM purchase from an app you already have. Weigh up the plans and packages on offer from Revolut against a couple of other alternatives to help you decide which is the best bet for your specific trip.
