Wells Fargo Business Direct Pay is an online payment service inside Wells Fargo Business Online that lets businesses send electronic payments from their Wells Fargo business accounts to US bank accounts. With Wells Fargo Business Direct Pay, customers can move money directly from a business checking account to employees, contractors, sales agents, and vendors, instead of printing and mailing checks.
Payments can be sent to US checking or savings accounts, including accounts at other banks, not just Wells Fargo.¹ That makes it easier to keep everyone paid from one place, even if different people use different banks.
Before a new payee can receive money, Wells Fargo needs to validate the account details. The Quick Start guide notes that this can take around two to three business days, depending on whether the payee’s account is with Wells Fargo or another bank.² Customers also need an eligible Wells Fargo business checking account and access to Wells Fargo Business Online to enroll in Direct Pay in the first place.
Getting started with Wells Fargo Business Direct Pay happens inside Wells Fargo Business Online. Customers first enroll in Business Online, then choose Direct Pay from the Transfers & Payments menu. From there, they link a qualifying business checking account and accept the Direct Pay Service Agreement to finish enrollment.³
Before any money moves, Wells Fargo needs to validate new payees. For accounts at Wells Fargo, this usually takes around two business days; for accounts at other banks, it can take up to three business days.⁴ Once validation is complete, the payee is marked active and can start receiving payments.
When setting up a payment, the business chooses the funding account, selects one or more payees (such as employees, contractors, or vendors), enters the payment amounts and due dates, and decides whether each payment is one-time or recurring. After payees are validated, payments scheduled on a business day before the stated cut-off time can arrive as soon as the next business day, as long as there are enough funds in the account.²
In practice, Direct Pay helps small businesses pay employees with direct deposit, send regular ACH payments to contractors, reimburse staff expenses, and handle recurring vendor payments from a single online dashboard, alongside other transfer and payment tools offered through Wells Fargo Business Online.⁵
Wells Fargo Business Direct Pay is a paid add-on, which is why there’s both a monthly access fee and per-payment charges. Direct Pay access costs $10 per monthly billing cycle for each business enrolled.⁶,⁷ There’s no fee for Direct Pay payments made to Wells Fargo personal bank accounts. Direct Pay payments to non-Wells Fargo personal bank accounts are $0.50 per payment, and payments made to business bank accounts are $3 each.⁶,⁷
When calculating the overall cost of direct deposit for small business owners using Wells Fargo Business Direct Pay, don’t forget to factor in both the monthly access fee and these per-payment charges. A business that pays many vendors or contractors outside Wells Fargo, for example, will see more per-payment fees than one that mainly pays Wells Fargo personal accounts.
These Direct Pay fees sit on top of any normal business checking account costs. Direct Pay itself is designed for payments to bank accounts in the US and US territories, while Wells Fargo Business Online wires are used for both domestic and international wire transfers with separate fees and exchange rate markups.⁷
Direct Pay uses the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network in the background, but it’s a specific Wells Fargo service designed to help businesses manage bulk and recurring payments.⁸ Essentially, ACH is the core electronic payment system that moves the money, but Direct Pay is the user-friendly Wells Fargo interface and pricing package built around that.
While both ACH and Direct Pay are based on the same network, they serve different purposes. Business Bill Pay, for example, is often used for one-off payments to US companies, typically to pay invoices or bills. Bill Pay can use either electronic payments or paper checks and may be better suited for those one-time payments.
Wires, on the other hand, are typically used for urgent, time-sensitive payments, either domestically or internationally. Wires usually come with higher fees than ACH, which makes them a less economical option for businesses sending regular payments.⁹
Direct Pay is most useful for businesses that regularly send payments to employees, contractors, or vendors within the US and prefer to manage those payments electronically from one platform.
