Wise vs Western Union: Exchange rates

Wise uses the mid-market rate for currency conversion and has no hidden fees or charges. You can see the live mid-market rate for your currency pair on Google or using a currency conversion tool, to check and compare.

So - does Western Union do currency exchange, and what rate do you get?

Unfortunately, the WU exchange rate is a bit more complex - the rate you get depends on different factors, including the way you pay, the currency and whether or not you’re a new or existing customer.

Western Union states clearly on their website that they make money from currency exchange. This means that on some exchange rates there’s likely to be an additional fee used - a markup which is added to the rate offered for conversion. This isn’t easy to see and means you have to compare the WU rate to the mid-market rate, or the rate you can secure from different providers, to decide if it’s a good deal.

Example: Sending 1000 USD with Western Union vs Wise

How much is it to send money through Western Union compared to Wise? Let’s find out.

In this case, we’re sending a payment to a bank in the US, and want the recipient to get 1,000 USD in the end.

Western Union offers promotional fees and rates for some first-time customers. But assuming you’re not using a new customer promotion, a 5 SGD transfer fee applies for this example. Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate and shows its fee upfront. Here’s how it works out:

ProviderTransfer feesExchange rate usedTotal costs in SGD
Wise4.43 SGD1 USD = 1.2833 SGD1,287.73 SGD
Western Union5 SGD1 USD = 1.2836 SGD1,288.60 SGD

*Fees and rates correct at time of research, 16th June 2026. Western Union’s total cost includes the 5 SGD transfer fee, assuming no first-time customer promotion is used.

As you can see, Wise costs slightly less in this example when the Western Union 5 SGD fee applies. But fees and exchange rates can change depending on the provider, route, payment method and whether any promotion applies, so it’s worth comparing the total cost before you send.
