Madi Corr

It’s never too early to start getting your business finances in order to simplify your tax admin. To help you start the new tax year on the right foot, we sat down with Kirsty Lowe, VP Finance at Perlego.

How can business start this tax year on the right foot?

KL: Plan. A lot of where things go wrong is treating your taxes as a compliance exercise at the end of the tax year. I think it's more about planning at the start of the year, particularly when you are global and dealing with multiple jurisdictions or countries. If you’re operating in the US, it’s like 50 countries in one. It's important to look ahead and not treat your business taxes as a check box. To start, consider how your go-to-market influences what might be taxable.

What are the most helpful accounting tools for businesses?

KL: I've got a few tools in our stack which I really love, but I also do think it comes down to the tools that you'll actually use. I've seen so many solutions that could be effective but are not necessarily right because your team won't use it and you don't like using it. At the end of the day, it'll be the one you love logging in to. At the moment, Claude is our team's best friend. We've also been using Numeric for a month, which I'm a big fan of.

What’s the most frequent tax mistake businesses make?

KL: Not planning. Planning is the bit no one wants to do if we're honest ad no offense to people who love tax, but for most people it's not something they want to do all the time. You kind of put it off and then you deal with it when it's a problem. If you wait for it to break, it's usually harder to fix it than if you gave it a little thought a little earlier.
