Remitly may not offer traditional bank wire transfers, as the platform is a digital financial services provider, not a bank.
However, you can still use the Remitly app to send money via international bank transfer to friends and family outside the US.
The provider specializes in global transfers to people you know. You can send money for personal payments like gifts, family support, travel costs, or bills.
Remitly doesn’t typically support commercial transfers, but you can use the app to make some transactions in exchange for goods or services, such as clothes, electronics, or loan payments.²
Here are some of the transfer methods available to Remitly customers:
- Bank transfer
- Cash pickup
- Cash home delivery
- Mobile wallet³
These transaction methods may differ depending on where you want to send your money. Look into all your options before initiating your first payment.
Remitly is generally considered very safe for bank transfers, as the provider carefully reviews all international money transfers to safeguard your funds.²
That said, you should only use Remitly to send money to people you know. Always check your recipient’s details before transferring large sums abroad.
You’ll need to consider how much it costs to send your wire transfer. Your Remitly money transfer fees will likely depend on where and how you want to transfer your funds.
Remitly’s pricing structure is a little misleading, as the provider claims to offer zero fees for overseas transfers. However, this only applies to first-time customers.
For future transfers, you’ll pay Remitly’s regular international money transfer fees. These differ by location.
For example, if you want to send money to Mexico from the US, you’ll pay 1.99 USD per bank deposit, debit card deposit, or mobile wallet payment. You’ll pay 3.99 USD for cash pickup.⁴
This pricing structure compares to some of Remitly's competitors, who use a fair and clear pricing structure to ensure you always know how much you're spending.
Remitly’s exchange rates are also confusing. The provider offers a special promotional rate for first-time customers, but you’ll pay Remitly’s regular exchange rate for any future transfers.
Remitly’s promotional rate is likely to be close to the standard interbank mid-market exchange rate. This is the only “fair” rate out there, with no added markups or hidden fees for currency conversion.
However, Remitly’s regular exchange rate includes a markup. This can add a significant cost to any international transactions.
The provider’s promotional rate also applies only to a specific transaction limit. For transfers to Mexico, you can send up to 1,000 USD at the special zero-fee rate.
If you send 1,000 USD to Mexico, your recipient will receive 18,450 Mexican pesos (MXN) at Remitly’s special rate (as of October 20, 2025).
At Remitly’s regular exchange rate, your recipient will receive 18,100 MXN.⁴ That’s quite a difference!

The speed of your wire transfer will depend on your bank or money transfer service. For most Remitly money transfers, you’ll need to choose between the provider’s express and economy service.
Express transfers should arrive faster, but you’ll pay a higher fee for your transaction. Your recipient may need to wait a little longer for economy transfers, but you should pay less in transfer or exchange rate fees.⁷
Once you’ve chosen your transfer method, Remitly will give you a more accurate transfer time. You can also access Remitly’s money transfer tracking system to keep an eye on your payment before it reaches your recipient.³
Remitly offers quick and easy international bank transfer solutions. You may not be able to send a traditional bank wire transfer via Remitly, but you can use the app for bank transfers, deposits, and mobile wallet payments.
However, you’ll need to think about Remitly’s transfer fees and exchange rate charges. The provider adds a hidden currency conversion markup to many global transfers, so you may end up spending more than expected.
If you’re looking for an alternative to Remitly which offers low cost, fast and easy international payments, the Wise account may be right for you.
