American banks in Panama: branches and more
Read on to find out what US banks have branches in Panama and tips on banking in the country.
If you regularly send money across borders, you may have heard about Remitly's new membership program. Remitly One promises to bundle several financial services into one monthly subscription for $9.99 USD.¹
But does this membership truly save you money, or are you better off sticking with individual services? We'll break down everything you need to know about Remitly One's features and costs, so you can make an informed decision on whether the monthly fee is worth it for you.
We'll also introduce the Wise account, which allows you to send, spend, and receive your money across the globe in over 40 currencies – all at the fair mid-market rate.

Remitly One is Remitly's monthly membership program that combines a few different financial tools for people who live, work, or have family across different countries. It's supposed to represent Remitly's shift from a simple money transfer service to a comprehensive financial platform.
The membership costs $9.99 USD per month and gives you access to Remitly's financial products.¹ You can still use Remitly Global services without a membership, but subscribers get additional perks like faster access to cash advances and higher rewards on stored money.
As of September 2025, the program is only available to select US customers, with plans to expand availability throughout the country by the end of the year and beyond.¹
The Remitly One global financial membership is still a work in progress, and the company has announced its plans to include more features in the future.
Currently, the following features are available for members:¹²
Remitly Flex: Get instant access to cash advances up to $250 USD with no interest and flexible repayment terms within 90 days
Remitly Flex: Earn 4% annual rewards on USD balances stored in your Remitly wallet, calculated daily and paid weekly
Remitly Card: Spend wallet funds globally through a digital debit card with no foreign transaction fees
Cash back rewards: Earn 1% back on qualifying activities like setting up autopay or adding funds to your wallet, capped at $5 USD monthly
Remitly has also outlined several features coming to the platform, though the availability dates remain uncertain for most:¹
Multi-currency accounts: Hold different currencies, including USDC stablecoins, in your wallet
Credit building: Use your remittance history to establish US credit
Better perks: Access identity protection, credit monitoring, and exclusive member rewards
Global availability: Remitly plans to expand the membership program to customers outside the US
However, these features aren't available as of September 2025, so you're essentially paying for promises of future value.
Remitly One's $9.99 USD monthly membership fee covers your access to enhanced features, but you'll still pay all regular Remitly charges for money transfers.¹
This means that every transaction includes a transfer fee, an exchange rate markup, and potentially express delivery charges for faster service.
Overall, over a full year, you're paying ~$120 USD just for the privilege of accessing member benefits. To make this worthwhile, you need to either use the 4% wallet rewards heavily or rely frequently on the other perks.¹
However, the cash back program caps at $5 USD monthly, which means it would take 24 months of maximum rewards just to cover your annual membership cost.¹²
If you’re looking for an alternative to Remitly which offers low cost, fast and easy international payments, the Wise account may be right for you.

Canceling your Remitly One membership isn't too difficult, but you'll need to time it right so that you're not charged for another month. Follow these steps:
- Open the Remitly app and log into your account
- Navigate to membership settings and look for "Manage My Membership" or something similar
- Select "Cancel Membership" and confirm your cancellation
You need to cancel your Remitly One membership at least 3 business days before your next billing date to avoid charges.²
Your membership will then stay active until the end of your current billing period, and you'll always be able to use your regular Remitly account for money transfers.
This feature won't be available until spring 2026, so the details are limited.¹
In a nutshell, Remitly plans to partner with a bank to offer credit lines to US members. When you send money through Remitly, they'll report this activity to credit bureaus as part of your credit history. This could help immigrants and others with limited US credit history establish a credit profile.
However, the specifics about credit limits, interest rates, and reporting details haven't been announced as of September 2025.
Remitly Flex works like a payday advance for money transfers. You can borrow up to 250 USD with no interest to send money immediately, but you'll need to repay it within 90 days to remain eligible for future advances.¹²
While not technically hidden, Remitly's exchange rate markups aren't usually clearly displayed upfront. You'll see the rate they're offering, but not how much markup they're adding above the mid-market rate.
The membership also doesn't cover any of your regular transfer costs, so you're paying the monthly fee plus all standard Remitly charges.
Remitly One bundles a few handy features into one financial membership, but the ~120 USD annual cost makes it pretty expensive for casual users.
If you're planning on keeping a high balance in your wallet and regularly need cash advances, it may work for you. However, the high fees and limited geographic availability make it less appealing than many alternatives.
For example, Wise offers similar (and, in some cases, superior) features for international money management without membership fees or exchange rate markups.
