What does travel insurance for Bali cover?

Travel insurance is there to help cover the financial fallout of any unexpected events that impact your trip. While the benefits differ between providers, most comprehensive plans include coverage for:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Emergency dental care
  • Compensation for cancelled or interrupted travel
  • Cover for lost luggage or stolen items
  • Trip delays
  • Personal liability protection
  • Cover for rental car excess

Depending on the insurance provider, you may also be able to add additional cover for higher risk activities like scooter riding, quad biking, or canyon tubing through Bali’s rugged terrain.

What does travel insurance not cover?

It’s just as important to know what your travel insurance won’t cover, as it is to know what it will. Every policy comes with a list of general exclusions, and you’ll find the full details in the fine print.

Some of the most common exclusions include:

  • Medical conditions you had before the trip unless you’ve disclosed and had them approved
  • Adventure sports or risky activities like motorbiking without a helmet or licence
  • Travelling after your doctor has advised against it
  • Theft claims when belongings were left unattended
  • Losses connected to illegal or irresponsible behaviour
  • Incidents involving alcohol or drug use

Things to look out for when choosing a travel insurance for Bali

Here are some important things to consider before picking a policy for your trip to Bali.

  • Does the policy include evacuation to somewhere with more sophisticated medical facilities if needed?
  • Are you covered for common adventure activities that holidaymakers do in Bali, such as scooter riding, quad biking, surfing, or snorkelling?
  • Will the insurer pay expenses upfront or will you need to pay first and claim later?

When selecting a travel insurance policy for your trip to Bali, it’s important to make sure the cover matches your plans.

  • Bali is known for scooter use but most travel insurers only cover scooter riding if specific conditions are met
  • Indonesia experiences natural disasters includes volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, so check if there’s any exclusions for this
  • Most insurers won’t cover incidents that happen while you’re under the influence of alcohol, with the amount of alcohol being described in the policy wording
