The ANZ Airport Visa Platinum is a credit card the bank offers its customers in New Zealand. The card comes with a range of benefits, including complimentary overseas travel insurance for cardholders and their families.
It's important to note that ANZ doesn’t have a separate travel insurance product that residents can purchase when they want to travel overseas. So, if you don’t have an ANZ Airport Visa Platinum credit card, you are ineligible for ANZ travel insurance.1

ANZ Travel Insurance Eligibility
Here is how to be eligible for ANZ travel insurance:2
You are a New Zealand citizen or resident.
You must hold a return travel ticket for your overseas travel before you leave New Zealand. Your return date should be within the applicable time limit (90 consecutive days).
You must be an ANZ Premium cardholder when booking your travel and the entire journey.
You must have booked your travel in one of the ways described under the heading “How you can activate this insurance policy for your travel” on the website.
ANZ can request additional documents, such as your passport, residency visa, travel booking receipts, and other documents relating to your ANZ Premium card account.
How can you activate an insurance policy for your travel?
Here is how to activate your travel insurance policy with the ANZ Premium card:3
You must use the ANZ Airport Visa Platinum to book at least 50% of your prepaid travel expenses.
Alternatively, if the payment gateway does not accept an ANZ Premium card, you must purchase at least 50% of your prepaid travel expenses using one of your ANZ accounts.
You can book your trip using points from a loyalty or rewards scheme. In that case, you must use your ANZ Premium card for at least 50% of your prepaid accommodation or other travel itinerary items.
You can still qualify for your ANZ travel insurance if your trip has been gifted, won, or purchased for you. In that case, you must call the ANZ Customer Care Team on 0800 499 666 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
ANZ has a maximum period of 90 consecutive days of insurance coverage for each trip. If your trip is longer than 90 days, you become entirely ineligible for coverage under the policy, even for the first three months of the trip.
Once abroad, if you need more time on your trip, you can extend your insurance coverage. Contact ANZ for details.

ANZ offers complimentary overseas travel insurance to ANZ Airport Visa Platinum credit cardholders. Unlike other travel insurance providers, the bank doesn’t provide different types of packages depending on your trip and destination. Instead, there is a single package with comprehensive coverage.
All you need to be eligible for ANZ overseas travel insurance is to have an ANZ Premium card and book your travel and other travel-related expenses with it.
If you’re new to ANZ, here is how to apply for an ANZ Airports Visa Platinum card:6
Ensure you’re eligible and will qualify for a credit card.
Prove your identity by providing the necessary documents.
Provide your financial details, such as income, assets, and expenses.
ANZ will contact you within five working days.
ANZ can seek additional information if necessary.
You will receive your ANZ Airports Visa Platinum Card with built-in overseas travel insurance on approval.
The annual fee for an ANZ Airports Visa Platinum card is $150 NZD, and your minimum credit limit will be $8,000 NZD.
How to apply for ANZ Travel Insurance
ANZ Travel Insurance is available with your ANZ Airports Visa Platinum credit card, so you don’t need to apply for travel insurance separately. However, you must check your eligibility:7
Provide information on your travel, such as dates, countries you intend to visit, number of dependents accompanying you on your trip, and for purpose.
Please note that you must pay for at least 50% of your prepaid travel expenses using the ANZ Airport Visa Platinum.

Keep in mind that though insurance coverage is available on your ANZ Airports Visa Platinum card, you must activate it before your travel dates.
Making an ANZ Travel Insurance Claim
If you have ANZ travel insurance, in most cases you’ll have to pay expenses upfront and then file a claim to be reimbursed. Here’s how you can file a claim online with ANZ:8
You will need supporting documents verifying your claim, such as original receipts and invoices.
Provide your policy details, including your credit card number, personal details, trip information, and documents.
Provide your bank account information to enable payment of your claim.
Once you submit your claim, you’ll receive an acknowledgment. The claim management team will contact you within ten business days with an approval decision or if they need more paperwork.

Can I extend or upgrade my ANZ Travel Insurance policy while travelling overseas?
You may extend your travel insurance after starting your trip, but you will need to contact ANZ. The bank might agree to additional coverage for illnesses or medical events, subject to a medical assessment and an additional premium payment.
Can you get an automatic extension under any special circumstances?
Yes, you can get an automatic extension if, during the insurance period, you’re prevented from returning to New Zealand for the following reasons.
You are declared medically unfit to travel by a registered practitioner because of an illness or injury experienced during the trip OR
Your transport experiences an unexpected delay, resulting in your homeward journey being completed outside the insurance period.
Under these circumstances, ANZ can extend your coverage by six months to enable you to complete your journey.
Does this ANZ travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Generally, ANZ Premium travel insurance does not cover pre-existing medical conditions. However, you may get coverage for such conditions subject to a medical assessment and an additional premium payment. Please note that you must complete the medical assessment before starting your journey.
