How to Open a Maybank Saving Account Online in 2026
Thinking of opening a Maybank savings account online? Check out our 2026 guide on how to do so, from the easiest MAE app steps to hidden fees!
Nobody likes fumbling with cash, whether you're buying a big ticket item or a teh tarik at a mamak stall.
One of the easiest ways to pay on-the-go is to use contactless payments – often locally called "PayWave." Whether you're tapping a physical Visa or Mastercard, or using a mobile wallet like Google Pay or Apple Pay, you can spend without even reaching for your wallet.
This guide covers how to activate contactless features (including PayWave) with Maybank for local transactions and how to enable overseas use for when you travel. Plus, we’ll touch on the Wise card as a smart, low-cost alternative for your international trips.

Many Maybank debit and credit cards have contactless payment functions, which allow you to either tap your card to a payment terminal when you’re in a store, or to add your card to a wallet like Google Pay on your phone for mobile transactions.
You can check if your card has the tap-and-go feature by checking for the contactless indicator on the card itself. Or you could ask in a Maybank branch if you’re unsure.
Depending on the account you hold, you could get a specific Maybank Platinum debit card¹ which comes with Visa PayWave, or a Mastercard issued card which also offers contactless payments. Both eligible Visa and Mastercards can be added to Apple Pay and Google Pay² for contactless mobile payments.
A good-to-know for Android users: from 27 January 2026, Maybank has updated its contactless process for Google Pay, allowing customers to make mobile payments up to the value of 2,500 MYR. If you pay with the physical card instead, you may have a default limit of 3,000 MYR per day – which can be raised for the Maybank Platinum debit card, up to 20,000 MYR.
If you want to use your Maybank Visa or Mastercard when you travel or shop online with international retailers, don’t forget that you’ll also need to activate overseas transactions with Maybank. We’ll touch more on that in this guide.
The exact steps to activate your card’s tap-and-pay feature depend on exactly how you want to use it. You can decide to tap with your physical card when you’re in stores locally or abroad. Or you can always add your cards to a digital wallet if you prefer mobile payments.
To start off, here’s how to activate a PayWave Maybank debit card for tap-and-pay contactless use with your physical card:
- Order your Maybank Visa Platinum Debit card in the Maybank app.
- Your card is delivered by mail to your registered address.
- Use your physical card and PIN to make one chip-and-PIN transaction in a store or ATM.
- Your card is now enabled for contactless payments in future.
Also, if you’re adding your Maybank card to Google Pay, then you first must download the MAE app and sign up for Secure2u. This gives you enhanced security features and can help keep your card safe. There’s a mandatory 12-hour cooling period once you’ve installed Secure2u before you can then add cards to Google Wallet in MAE.
Here’s how to add your Maybank card to Google Wallet in the MAE app, once you’ve installed Secure2u³:
- Log into the MAE app and select ‘View All Accounts’.
- Tap ‘CARDS’ and choose the card you want to add to Google Pay.
- Tap ‘Add to Google Pay’ and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Authorise the card via Secure2u.
Also, if you’d like to add your Maybank card to your Apple Wallet in the MAE app, the steps are similar - just tap on the Apple Pay widget.
- On the MAE app, tap on the Apple Pay widget.
- Select a card to add to Apple Pay.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
- Once you complete the Apple Wallet’s required steps, you will be redirected back to the MAE app.
Another method is via the Apple Wallet app. First you need to know:
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Give the + button in the top right corner a tap.
- Scan your card with the camera and follow the instructions
If you intend to use your card for overseas contactless payments, there’s a further step. You can complete this authorisation online by logging into your Maybank digital banking service⁴. Here’s how:
- Log into Maybank2u and go to 'Settings'.
- Select 'Cards', then 'Manage Debit Cards'.
- Select 'Overseas Debit Card Activation' and then 'Enable'.
- Enter the date you want to authorise your card for overseas use and then complete the verification step to confirm.
Here’s how to activate MAE PayWave for overseas use, if you have the MAE card⁵:
- Log into the MAE app and go to ’CARDS’
- Tap ‘MAE Visa Card’ and then toggle the overseas usage button
- Enter the dates you want to enable your card for overseas use
As we’ve seen, you can use Maybank’s PayWave functionality overseas but it’s important to remember your card may have a foreign transaction fee or exchange rate markup.
If you want to spend like a local without the pesky hidden fees, the Wise card is a smart travel alternative. It uses the mid-market exchange rate - the one you see on Google - so you only pay a small, transparent fee.
| 👀 With Wise you can spend and convert your money at the rate you usually see on Google, with low, transparent fees that are presented upfront. |

Take a moment to compare your card’s rate with the real-time mid-market rate Wise offers below:
Here are a few common reasons why a contactless or mobile payment may fail - and what you can do about them:
- Your card has not been activated - you’ll need to make one Chip and PIN payment before your card can be used for tap-and-pay
- You’ve reached your daily limits for contactless payments - limits can be changed in the app
- You’re making a transaction over the maximum payment amount. You may need to present your card, or make a chip and PIN payment for high value transactions
- Technical issues: the merchant’s terminal may not be working, or your card may be damaged. Try Chip and PIN or use a different card

The Wise card lets you spend in 40+ currencies at the mid-market rate including CNY, JPY, GBP, and SGD so you know you'll be getting a great deal in over 150+ countries. Simply create a free Wise account, order a card and top-up MYR to get started.
Virtual cards are free and can be added to your Google or Apple Pay wallet, while a physical Wise card can be ordered for a low fee of 13.7 MYR. Having a physical Wise card allows you to make chip and pin payments, as well as two free ATM withdrawals to the value of 1,000 MYR each month, before low fees start.
While abroad, you can choose to spend with directly in MYR and let auto-conversion do the trick, or convert to your desired currency with your Wise account. Either way, you’ll get the exchange rate you see on Google, with low, transparent fees from 0.77%.
Change your Maybank PayWave limit at an ATM or by logging into the Maybank2u website.
Yes. Many Maybank cards are compatible with Google Pay, including both Visa and Mastercard network cards⁶.
Maybank cards are considered secure to use with normal precautions. There are limits on the amount you can spend using a contactless payment, which you can adjust in your Maybank app if you would like to.
