How can I pay with a QR code?

QR payments are a convenient way to pay, especially in countries where card payments are not widely accepted yet. QR payments let you skip the hassle of cash withdrawals, carrying notes and coins, and dealing with loose change.

You can use your Wise app to make QR payments in specific countries. When you make a QR payment, the money is taken directly from a currency in your Wise account.

Wise supports multiple ways of making QR payments:

  • You can scan a QR code using the QR scanner in your Wise app.

  • You can import a QR code from your phone gallery.

  • You can show your QR code from your Wise app to the merchant you’re paying (for Alipay+ only)

What is a QR code?

A QR code is a two-dimensional code that you can scan using the camera in the Wise app. They look something like this (you don't need to scan this one when setting up a transfer):

QR code

A payment QR code would usually store information about the merchant or recipient names, transaction amount, and currency of payment. This makes the transaction seamless and quick.

How do I pay with QR codes using the Wise app?

  1. Tap on the Scan button on your Wise Home tab. Alternatively, you can go to the Cards tab, swipe left on the image of your card and tap on the QR code symbol.

  2. Once you’ve launched the QR code scanner, you can do any of the following:

    1. Aim the QR scanner at a supported QR code.

    2. Tap on Photo to upload a QR code from your image gallery.

    3. Tap on Document to upload a file stored on your device.

    4. Tap on the QR code icon (top right corner) to retrieve your own QR code. You can show this QR code to the merchant you are paying, as long as the merchant supports Alipay+

  3. Enter your payment amount (if applicable) and review any fees.

  4. Confirm your payment.

  5. Done! You can review the payment anytime under your transaction history in the Wise app

Which QR codes are supported?

Please refer to the table below for supported QR code networks across various countries.

Please note you can scan an Alipay+ QR code (or any QR code powered by Alipay+) only when you’re traveling outside of your home country. Your home country is the country where your Wise account is registered.

For example: If your Wise account is registered in Singapore, you can only scan Alipay+ QR codes (or any QR code powered by Alipay+) when you’re traveling outside of Singapore.
