How does WeChat pay for foreigners work?

Emma-Jane Stogdon

WeChat is the most popular social media and messaging app in China. As part of WeChat there’s also a financial function called WeChat Pay. It allows users to make easy cash payments, but it wasn’t always available for foreign use.

However, if you are in the UK and are looking to visit China, there are options for foreigners to link WeChat Pay to international bank accounts. This guide will take you through how to use WeChat Pay if you are international, what the limitations on the app are and some viable solutions to the problems you might face.

Remember that you can also use Wise as an alternative platform to convert currency with mid-market rates and low, transparent fees.* A Wise account allows you to generate SWIFT-enabled account details for your Wise Chinese Yuan balance to receive international payments. You can also send CNY from your Wise account to Chinese banks and WeChat Pay.

Can foreigners use WeChat Pay without a Chinese bank account?

Any foreigners who want to use WeChat Pay in China will face an immediate issue if they don’t have a Chinese bank account. However, that’s not as big a problem as may first appear, considering WeChat keeps making alterations to the system to benefit international users.

Those who have downloaded the app can now connect international cards to the WeChat Pay system, meaning those eligible, like Visa, Mastercard and Discover, will allow you to receive money through the platform.1

However, a Wise Card can work in China without needing to be connected to a Chinese bank account, making for a useful alternative. You can also connect your Wise card directly to your WeChat Pay.

How to setup WeChat Pay as a foreigner

Setting up WeChat Pay as a foreign user is surprisingly easy. We’ll take you through each step so that you can efficiently access these financial features as soon as you arrive in the country.

Downloading the app

The very first step is rather straight-forward. To use WeChat Pay you must first download the WeChat app. WeChat is available on iOS, Android, macOS and Windows, meaning you’ll have a variety of options at your disposal.

In fact, you can download it right now. You do not need to be in China to do so. After downloading the app, you’ll need to set up a basic login, following standard app procedure.2

WeChat Pay verification

Before being able to fully verify your account, you’ll need to upload various documentation to prove your identity. This will include a photo of yourself, a photo of ID such as a passport, and any additional personal details.

You do not need a Chinese phone number to complete this process, but the phone number you provide must be contactable.3

Linking your UK card to WeChat Pay

Once your account has been verified, linking a UK card to WeChat Pay as a foreign user is a basic process. On your account you’ll find ‘Me.’ You’ll need to follow ‘Pay & Services,’ then ‘Wallet’ and then ‘Bank Cards’ before tapping ‘Add a New Card.’ From there, you’ll be able to link the eligible card of your choice, including the Wise card.4

It’s worth noting that you may sometimes see WeChat Pay referred to as Weixin Pay. These are one and the same. To avoid confusion altogether, consider using Wise in China instead.

How to make payments in China

Once you’ve linked your card, you’ll need to find out more about how to actually make payments. Wise has you covered there too, with this effective route forward.

How QR Codes work

Merchants can create their own QR Codes using WeChat Pay. As soon as they have done so, they can share their QR Code with those looking to complete a payment.

Those on the receiving end can then scan the code, confirm the amount that should be sent and make the payment. This can be used both in-person and on digital stores.5 Merchants can also scan the user’s account, to create a simple payment connection.

Using WeChat Pay for taxis and public transport

To make your trip to China easier, it’s worth noting that many taxis and other forms of public transport accept payment through WeChat pay. Scan the QR code as you go along and complete the payment process as is standard.6

You can also buy tickets online using WeChat Pay. However, to have the correct money in your account, consider using a Wise card, which can hold Chinese Yuan among 40+ other currencies for spending in 150+ countries worldwide.

WeChat Pay limits and fees for foreigners

While WeChat Pay is available to foreigners to use, it is not without its limitations. It’s important to explore these set-backs before deciding whether to use WeChat Pay when visiting China. We’ve covered some of these below.

Transaction limits

There are transaction limits imposed on international users of WeChat Pay. On single transactions, there is a limit of 6,500 RMB. There are also monthly limitations of 50,000 RMB and yearly limitations of 65,000 RMB.7

💡Renminbi (RMB) which translates to "people's money" is China's official currency. RMB is the name of the currency and the Yuan (CNY) is the base unit used to price things, but the two terms are used interchangeably.

The 3% fee

There are also transaction fees to account for. Any single transaction under the value of 200 RMB will be waived. However, anything over this number will receive a 3% transaction fee.

To best avoid being hit by larger transaction fees explore using a Wise account, where you’ll have transparency and choice when approaching those key currency conversions.7

Other restrictions

There are still some restrictions on the cards that can be linked up to a WeChat account. International users are also not able to access WeChat Pay for payment transfers and to send red packets between friends and family members.7

While WeChat Pay might be a viable short-term solution for international tourists, it is not, for example, a perfect fit for those looking to run a business abroad. Use Wise for international transfers instead, just remember that users must have a valid Chinese national ID card to do so.

WeChat Pay vs. Alipay

Alipay is another financial platform in China, which is thought to be more user-friendly for foreigners. It is known as a super app and is a reliable digital wallet for visitors.

Alipay is easier to set up, but WeChat Pay can work exceptionally well for those seeking to make simple payments with merchants who already use the app. Both offer similar functionality. Wise can be used to fund and manage international transfers in support of either app.8

Avoid hidden exchange fees on WeChat Pay using Wise

Although users cannot avoid being hit by WeChat Pay’s 3% fee on larger transactions, if you link to a Wise card on your WeChat Pay account, you’ll be able to take advantage of the mid-market exchange rate.

Wise account holders can convert and hold a CNY balance in their Wise multi-currency account. When a Wise card is linked to WeChat Pay and it’s charged in CNY, Wise will take that payment directly from the CNY balance. This saves you additional money as you’ll avoid unnecessary transaction fees and limit the power of poor exchange rates
