Romania is one of many countries which offers a digital nomad visa. The visa itself is a long-stay D visa, but there’s also the requirement to get a temporary digital nomad residence permit once you arrive in the country.
The long-stay D visa is designed for non-EU nationals wanting to live and work in Romania for more than 90 days in any 180 day period.¹ On arrival in the country on this visa, you can then apply for a temporary residence permit for digital nomads which initially lasts 6 months but can be extended.²
You’ll need to be working for an employer outside of the country, although self-employed workers can also make use of this visa - there’s a slightly different residence permit they’ll need to apply for.
Unfortunately, you can’t bring family members with you on the digital nomad temporary residence permit.²
To meet the Romania digital nomad visa requirements, you’ll need to have a minimum monthly income of at least 18,500 RON (approx. €3,634 EUR or £3,190 GBP). You’ll need to show evidence of this for the 6 months before you apply.²
You’ll also need private health insurance cover for the duration of your stay, and be prepared to have a full medical exam when you arrive in the country.²
The Romania digital nomad visa costs €120 EUR (approx. £105 GBP) in application fees.³ There are also likely to be additional fees to pay once you arrive in Romania and apply for your residency permit.
Aside from the upfront application fees, there may be other costs to factor in. For example, the cost of getting travel/health insurance, or having documents translated.

While you’re living and working in Romania as a digital nomad, you’ll need to know if you’re required to pay taxes on your income.
There’s no specific Romania digital nomad visa tax, just income tax rules that apply to anyone considered a tax resident of the country.
If you stay in Romania for more than 183 days, you may be deemed to be a tax resident. This means that your worldwide income can be subject to income tax.⁴It’s likely that this will happen if you end up renewing your residence permit beyond the initial 6 months.
There’s also the issue of what income taxes are due in the UK, and the need to avoid paying tax twice on the same income.
Tax between countries can be really complicated, so it’s best to get professional advice to make sure you understand your obligations.
That’s everything you need to know about the digital nomad visa in Romania. Make sure you check for any updates to the application process or the requirements ahead of applying.

After this time, you may be able to apply for a permanent residence permit (if eligible). To be eligible for citizenship, you’ll need to have been legally in the country for at least 8 years.⁵
