When is the best time to visit Vietnam from UK

The best time to visit Vietnam depends on the regions you want to explore, since the weather can vary significantly between the north, central coast and the south. Northern Vietnam has four distinct seasons, the centre experiences a period of heavy autumn rain and the south has a wet and dry season.

In general, December through April is the best season if you plan on exploring multiple regions. There are plenty of things to enjoy outside the peak season as well, as long as you understand the weather patterns in the part of Vietnam you’re visiting.

Below, we’ll break down the seasons and help you decide the best time to visit Vietnam depending on your preferred activities and interests.

Dry season: December to April

For many travellers, December to April is considered the best time to visit Vietnam. During this time, large parts of the country have comfortable temperatures and lower humidity.

In the north, including destinations like Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, temperatures are mild and ideal for sightseeing and outdoor adventures. The far north, especially areas such as Sapa and Mu Cang Chai district, can get cold in December and January, particularly at night.

Central Vietnam, including Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue, enjoys sunny days from the end of January. This is a wonderful time for visiting beaches like An Bang or exploring historic sites such as the Imperial City in Hue.

Southern Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, has warm and dry weather during this period. This is a great time for exploring local markets, taking river trips or relaxing on Phu Quoc Island. Christmas and New Year are lively in south Vietnam, and the Vietnamese Lunar New Year is a major celebration. It usually falls in February, so booking accommodation and flights well in advance is recommended if you plan to travel at that time.

Hot season: May to August

From May to August, temperatures rise across Vietnam, particularly in the north and central regions. This is a good time to visit if you enjoy long sunny days spending time by the sea, although the north experiences occasional rain. However, this period is also the rainiest in the south, so skip this region if you want dry weather.

May is an excellent month to visit Mu Cang Chai and the rice terraces of Sapa. The weather begins to warm up, but it’s still comfortable for hiking and sightseeing. Danang, Nha Trang and other beaches in central Vietnam are also at their best.

The north becomes more humid in June and July, which can make exploring Hanoi and its surrounding areas challenging in the middle of the day. To escape the heat, many travellers head to central Vietnam for swimming, snorkelling and diving. If you visit the south in August, particularly the Con Dao coastline, you may have the chance to see the sea turtles hatching and walking to the ocean.

This season also includes several cultural events. Tet Doan Ngo, or the Dragon Boat Festival, takes place during early summer and focuses on health, cleansing rituals and community celebrations.

Wet season: September to November

The rainy season varies by region, but it generally peaks between September and November. Although rainfall can be heavy, especially in central Vietnam, it’s still possible to plan an enjoyable trip during these months if you choose your destinations carefully.

Northern Vietnam in September often has good weather, great for seeing the harvest in the Mu Cang Chai rice fields. Vietnam’s Independence Day is celebrated at the beginning of September, bringing parades, fireworks and performances across the country.

October and November bring heavy rain to central Vietnam, but the sun starts to come out in the north and south. Accommodation starts getting more expensive as high season approaches, but good deals are still available, making this a good period for budget-conscious travellers.

What to do in Vietnam

Vietnam is a country rich in culture, history and natural beauty. No matter what time of year you visit, there’s plenty to see and experience. Here are some ideas to help you build your itinerary.

Eat authentic Vietnamese food

Vietnamese cuisine is famous for its fresh local ingredients. Although many visitors are already familiar with dishes like pho and banh mi, enjoying them in Vietnam is a completely different experience.

Street food stalls offer delicious and affordable meals, from flavourful noodle dishes like bun cha to crispy pancakes like banh xeo. You can also book a cooking class and learn traditional cooking techniques.

Trek through the northern mountains

The mountainous regions of Sapa, Ha Giang and Cao Bang reveal a different side of Vietnam, with breathtaking scenery and diverse ethnic minority communities. If you’re an adventurous traveller, you can trek through rice terraces, stay in homestays and explore mountain passes in this region.

The Ha Giang Loop is one of Vietnam’s most scenic motorcycle routes. Experienced riders can take the journey themselves, but you can also hire a local driver and simply enjoy the views.

Experience Vietnam’s coffee culture

As one of the world’s largest coffee producers, Vietnam has a vibrant coffee culture. From local cafes to speciality roasteries, you’ll find a range of interesting drinks. Try Hanoi’s famous egg coffee or visit coffee farms and learn about how the beans are grown, harvested and roasted.

Explore historical and cultural sites

Vietnam’s cultural and historical attractions span centuries. The Imperial City in Hue offers a fascinating look into the era of the Nguyen Dynasty, while the Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City provide insight into Vietnam’s wartime past and the resilience of local communities.
