Can a foreigner get a credit card in Thailand?

Yes. A foreign resident in Thailand can get a credit card from many major local banks, subject to meeting eligibility criteria which include age, income and employment status.

Not all banks offer all credit cards to foreign applicants. Where cards are made available to foreigners they may also have higher minimum income requirements (usually at least 50,000 THB a month) and a requirement to show an established work history in Thailand. This is because you’re less likely to have an established credit history for the bank to rely on when assessing your suitability for a card.

How to apply for a Thailand credit card as a foreigner?

Thai banks may have an online or in app application process for credit cards, but this is often not available to foreign applicants. That’s because foreigners are asked to provide different documents compared to Thai citizens in many cases, and may also have differing minimum income and employment requirements compared to locals. For this reason, it’s common to be asked to visit a branch to complete your card application and get everything verified.

If you’re going to a branch to apply for a card you’re likely to be asked to bring along proof of ID and address, income and employment. The exact documents needed can vary but may include the following.

Identification documents:

  • Copy of Passport
  • Copy of Work Permit in Thailand

Other supporting documents such as:

  • Copy of Non-Immigrant Visa or Smart Visa
  • Copy of Yellow House Registration Book
  • Secondary ID document issued by the Thai government or your home country government

Proof of income:

  • Copy of income documents such as a salary certificate, payslip, or a withholding tax certificate
  • Copy of personal bank statements for the past 6 months
