How to open a bank account in Thailand?

Thai banks offer some account services - as well as additional products like credit cards and loans in some cases - to foreign applicants. However it’s important to note that most Thai banks only extend account services to people holding long term visas or permanent residency in Thailand.

Generally opening an account with a Thai bank as a tourist, or on a short term visa of six months or less, is tricky or even impossible. Some Thai banks do offer non-resident accounts for foreign currency deposits, but they’re not usually suited to spending in Thailand.

Requirements and restrictions for foreigners

As we’ve seen, Thai banks usually require you to have a long term visa for Thailand to apply for an account. Additional requirements are often in place for more complex services such as loans and credit cards.

To give a feel, let’s look at the documentation needed as a foreigner to open an account with UOB - one of the banks we feature in this guide. To open an account with UOB you’ll be asked for the following¹:

  • Your valid passport
  • Evidence of your right to reside in Thailand- such as a non-immigrant visa or work permit
  • A certificate issued by your home country showing your ID, a verification via SWIFT or a similar secondary proof of identity

Thai banks usually do not allow foreign customers to open an account online or in their mobile apps. Instead you’ll be asked to visit a branch in person with all your paperwork to be verified and ensure the account is suitable for you.

Not sure how to decide on the right Thai bank account for your needs? We’ll also take a look at how to choose the best bank for daily banking, next.

What to consider before choosing a Thai bank for foreigners?

There’s not really one single best bank for foreigners in Thailand - as several major local and regional banks offer foreigners THB account services you’ll be able to compare a few options to decide which is the best fit for your needs.

The first thing to do is to double check the eligibility requirements of each bank you’re interested in, based on the type of visa you have and the documents you can provide to support your application. This will help you draw up a shortlist of banks to look at in more detail.

It’s then worth considering carefully the ways you’ll need to use your account. For example if you prefer to pay digitally with contactless payments or QR payments, you’ll want a bank with an intuitive mobile app. Or if you’re expecting to use more cash you might focus on finding the best bank to withdraw money in Thailand instead.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options be sure to read the account terms and fees carefully to check the costs of transactions you make regularly. Some services commonly needed by foreigners in Thailand - such as sending payments overseas - can be quite costly, so investing time in finding the best fit for your transaction types can save you money.
