SEPA is a payment in euros to countries that are members of the SEPA zone. These are mainly EU countries, but also, for example, Great Britain or Norway. Compared to other international payments, SEPA payments are cheap and fast.
🔎 Example: You need to send a payment to Slovakia with Raiffeisenbank – let's say 500 EUR from your Czech koruna account. This means two things are of interest to you: the fee for the payment itself, and most importantly, Raiffeisenbank's euro exchange rate. The exchange rate has the biggest impact on the final transfer cost. For a better understanding, compare Raiffeisenbank with Wise – even though Raiffeisenbank has no fee for SEPA payments, with Wise it's 360 CZK cheaper thanks to a more favourable exchange rate.
| Raiffeisenbank | Wise | |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | 12,552 CZK | 12,192 CZK |
| Of which, fee | 0 CZK¹ | 65 CZK* |
| Exchange rate 1 EUR | 25.104 CZK² | 24.255 CZK |
Data valid as of the article's update date.
* You can also hold money directly in euros in your Wise account. In that case, you wouldn't pay anything for a transfer to another euro account.
SEPA payments were established to enable faster and cheaper fund transfers. Therefore, they are free with most Czech banks, and Raiffeisenbank is no exception. Despite this, a SEPA payment can still become more expensive due to the exchange rate, as you saw in the example above. If the exchange rate isn't favourable, you'll pay more than the actual value of the euro.
🫰 You will only pay extra for a SEPA payment with Raiffeisenbank if you need to send it urgently – this will cost you 100 CZK. Incoming SEPA payments are, of course, free with Raiffeisenbank.¹
While SEPA payments are free with Czech banks, they still profit from them. They do this by adding a margin to the exchange rate. The base rate, or mid-market rate, set by central banks, is increased by commercial banks with a markup of 2–4% on average. The example at the beginning of the article clearly demonstrated this, showing that with the mid-market rate, you would save 360 CZK on your Wise account. If you transfer euros frequently or in larger amounts, you will definitely feel the exchange rate markup.

With a Wise account, you always get the mid-market exchange rate for all currency conversions, so your money doesn't lose value during transfers. You can also hold euros directly in your account and avoid currency exchange altogether. This applies to the other 40+ currencies available to you.

Once you send money outside the European Economic Area, SEPA payments won't help you, even if it's a transaction in euros. These transfers are processed through the SWIFT system. Banks worldwide are connected to SWIFT, which allows for faster money movement than in the past – even so, SWIFT payments still take considerably longer than SEPA payments.
SWIFT transfers will hit your wallet harder. You can find out how it looks specifically with Raiffeisenbank in the table.¹
| Account type | Fee for outgoing SWIFT payment | Fee for incoming SWIFT payment |
|---|---|---|
| Chytrý účet (Smart Account) | 1%, min. 300, max. 1,500 CZK | 1%, min. 300, max. 1,200 CZK |
| Aktivní účet (Active Account) | First two free, 1%, min. 300, max. 1,500 CZK | First two free, subsequent 1%, min. 300, max. 1,200 CZK |
| Exkluzivní účet (Exclusive Account) | 1%, min. 300, max. 1,500 CZK | Free |

With the Active Account, keep in mind that the first two free payments apply to transactions in both directions – incoming and outgoing.
A Raiffeisenbank SEPA payment should arrive in the recipient's account the next business day. With Wise, it's usually even faster – you'll be looking at just hours, or even minutes. You'll always see the approximate duration before sending the payment.
A euro payment outside the SEPA zone – for example, when transferring euros to the USA – should arrive within three business days of being sent.³
You now know almost everything about Raiffeisenbank SEPA payments. The only thing left is to learn how to send one. Follow these steps.⁴
