🔍 Quick example: You're sending 500 EUR from your CZK account to a German account. How much will you pay in Czech korunas with Komerční banka and how much with Wise?
| Provider | Amount paid (incl. fee) | Exchange rate for 1 EUR |
|---|---|---|
| Komerční banka | 12,580 CZK¹ | 25.16 CZK² |
| Wise | 12,195 CZK | 24.261 CZK |
Data valid as of the article's writing date.
With Komerční banka, this specific transfer would cost you 385 CZK more than with Wise. This is due to Komerční banka's unfavorable exchange rate compared to the market rate. You'll learn more about this in the article.
Just like other banks, KB determines the fee for an international payment based on the destination. You guessed right, sending money to Slovakia will cost less than sending it to the USA, for instance.
If you're making a transfer in euros within the European Economic Area, the payment is usually free. This is the standard for most Czech banks. You'll only pay if you wish to initiate the payment at a branch. The fee for this is 100 CZK.¹
You pay a fee for transfers to foreign countries in a currency other than EUR, without exception. KB determines the fee for an international payment based on the amount you're sending. For amounts up to 20,000 CZK, the payment costs 200 CZK. If you're sending more, you'll pay 1% of the amount, with a maximum of 1,200 CZK.¹
☝️ Please note! If you are using an account from the MůjÚčet group, you will pay 0.9% of the sent amount, with a minimum fee of 250 CZK and a maximum of 1,500 CZK.³
The final cost of an international payment with KB is influenced by the exchange rate significantly. Komerční banka sets its own rate, adding a margin to the market rate. This allows them to profit from currency exchange, while you lose out. This is how all traditional banks operate, and KB's rates are among the less favorable ones.

A Wise account is tailor-made for international payments. It supports 40+ currencies, and all exchanges use the mid-market rate, which is the rate set by central banks. International transfers come with a low fee starting from 0.42%. For comparison, KB charges 1% for amounts over 20,000 CZK, or 200 CZK for smaller amounts. And the best part? You can open a Wise account for free.
Open your Wise account for free, quickly and easily. All you'll need is your ID and a mobile device – there's no need to visit a bank office.
With the Wise Account you can:

You can initiate a payment through either the mobile or the internet banking app. However, this depends on which version of KB banking you are using.
For SEPA payments, you'll only need the IBAN and BIC. Other international payments require more details, which you'll see directly when initiating the payment. This may include:
You can also submit an order at a branch counter. For some non-standard currencies, this is the only way to initiate a payment.⁴ The process is straightforward: fill out the form for a SEPA or international payment, hand it in, and pay the processing fee of 100¹ or 300³ CZK, depending on the currency and account type.
To receive a payment from abroad, simply provide the payer with your banking details in international format. You can find your IBAN in the internet and mobile banking information⁶, as well as the bank's BIC/SWIFT code, which is KOMBCZPPXXX⁷.
Incoming SEPA payments are free, but you pay for all others. With an account from the Tariffs portfolio, you pay 200 CZK for payments up to 20,000 CZK. For amounts above that, you pay 1%, up to a maximum of 1,200 CZK.¹ With an account from the MůjÚčet portfolio, you pay 0.9%, with a minimum of 225 CZK and a maximum of 1,095 CZK.³
The transfer speed depends on the account's currency. A SEPA payment should arrive by the next business day at the latest, while other transfers should take up to three business days.⁸ Naturally, the speed of intermediary banks also plays a role.
You can send money abroad without problems, but not always for free. You now know KB's fees for international transfers. Even though some payments are free, you can never avoid the cost of the exchange rate. With Wise, however, it's possible.
