Kit Review: Is the Kit App and Card Worth It For Your Kids?

Commbank offers the Kit app and card, for children aged 5 to 14, to help with saving, budgeting and safe spending. Parents and guardians can add their children to Kit and order a Kit Card for online, in person and mobile spending, with smart controls and transaction notifications.

What is Kit?

Kit² is the Commbank app for kids, allowing children from 5 to 14³ to get a digital account and card, with parental oversight and built-in spending controls.

You can use Kit even if you’re not a Commbank customer, but to get a kids account, a parent or guardian will need to sign up first. This guide walks through what Kit does and how to get started.

Is Kit safe?

Kit accounts are offered through a Commbank partnership with Hay - a licensed and regulated provider in Australia.

Kit accounts and cards have some smart safety features to offer peace of mind including giving parents and guardians access to view transactions and set controls, making it easier to keep an eye on spending.

How does Kit work?

To use Kit a parent or guardian will need to download the Kit app and create an account. From here, you can then add your kids and teens to the account and order Kit cards for them.

You’ll need to top up the Kit account from your linked bank account (the Boss account)⁴. This linked account is also used to pay membership fees and for any pocketmoney payments you set and automate to the account.

Kit accounts offer tools to help kids and teens learn about money management - including ways to spend, save and grow their balance.

Spend on and offline

Kit offers debit cards which are linked to the digital kid’s account, and which allow online and in person spending at home and abroad. You can link your digital card to wallets like Apple Pay, and use the physical card for ATM withdrawals up to 150 AUD/day⁵.

Kit also offers gamified features to encourage younger people to learn about financial management and budgeting.

Schedule and pay pocketmoney

Parents can set up pocketmoney payments which recur automatically, called a PayDay. It’s also possible to have the money sent to the child’s account split into the Kit account for spending, and the Youthsaver for interest earning, if you choose to link your Kit and Youthsaver accounts together.

Create savings goals

Kit allows kids to set savings goals known as Stacks⁶ which they use to save. Money in Stacks can not be spent until it is transferred back to the Kit Card account. Kids can have up to 10 stacks - these funds do not accrue interest⁷, but you can choose to move money to a Youthsaver for interest earning if you prefer.

If you’re eligible⁸ you can also link Kit to a Youthsaver account to earn up to 4.55% interest (at time of research - 19th March 2026). Linking Kit to this interest bearing account lets kids move their money simply to the savings product - and rewards regular deposits with bonus interest.
