ANZ complimentary credit card travel insurance. How does it work?

If you’re travelling soon there’s a good chance you’re thinking about insurance. It’s something that’s well worth considering, especially given that one in four Aussies experienced an insurable event on their last trip abroad.³

ANZ actually offers complimentary travel insurance to eligible holders of certain credit cards.¹ This guide will let you know which cards the insurance applies to, as well as the eligibility criteria, benefits and exclusions.

What is complimentary travel insurance with ANZ credit cards

If you have an eligible ANZ credit card you could gain access to two types of complimentary travel insurance, provided you meet the eligibility criteria.¹

  • International travel insurance
  • Domestic travel insurance

ANZ credit cards with complimentary travel insurance

The ANZ complimentary travel insurance is only available with certain credit cards. Here’s a complete list of which cards are currently included in the program.¹

  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum
  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Black
  • ANZ Rewards Platinum
  • ANZ Rewards Black
  • ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures (discontinued for new customers)
  • ANZ Platinum

Who Administers credit card travel insurance on behalf of ANZ

Allianz Global Assistance provides complimentary travel insurance cover to ANZ’s credit card customers.¹ This means when you make a claim it’ll be Allianz you’re making the claim through.

What are the main benefits of complimentary credit card insurance with ANZ

The main benefits for the complimentary travel insurance are largely for expenses relating to emergency situations when you’re travelling abroad. Here’s a few of the benefits for the international travel insurance that have no capped dollar amount for accepted claims.²

  • Overseas emergency medical
  • Overseas emergency assistance
  • Evacuation and repatriation
  • Personal safety evacuation
  • Hijack
  • Additional expenses

Keep in mind that some of these areas of coverage may have an excess that applies.

Types of coverage offered by ANZ international credit card travel insurance

Here’s a few of the other things covered by the complimentary ANZ international travel insurance, along with the applicable excess.² You can find the complete list on their website.

Cancellation Total limit of $20,000. Travel agent cancellation fees and journey rescheduling costs aren’t part of this limit. $350

As you can see these items only mention a limit for the cardholder and their spouse. That’s because the dependents come under the cardholder or spouse's limits.² You’ll need to check the policy to see where else this applies.

Types of coverage offered by ANZ domestic credit card travel insurance

Here’s an overview of the areas of coverage for the complimentary ANZ domestic travel insurance.²

What’s not covered under this complimentary travel insurance

As with most insurance policies there are exclusions to the coverage, including certain activities, medical situations and circumstances. Here’s some of the policy exclusions that apply to both the ANZ international and domestic travel insurance.²

  • Claims after travelling against medical advice or while terminally ill
  • Scuba diving without an open water certificate or qualified, registered instructor
  • Riding a quad bike or motorbike unless you’re driving one with a capacity of 200cc or less and you hold a valid Australian motorcycle licence or a licence valid for the country you’re in if your Australian licence isn’t recognised
  • Interference in your plans by government regulation, prohibition or intervention
  • Claims arising due to your intoxication or the effect of your use of alcohol

Eligibility for ANZ credit card insurance

Here’s what makes you eligible for ANZ’s complimentary international travel insurance.²

Cardholder Spouse or Dependent
  1. Reside in Australia or have a visa that that allows residency
  2. Spend $250 on prepaid travel costs charged to the eligible card account before leaving Australia
  3. Have a return ticket before leaving Australia
  4. Aged under 81 when the other criteria is met
  1. Spouse or dependent of an eligible cardholder
  2. Reside in Australia or have a visa that that allows residency
  3. Each spouse/dependent travels with the cardholder for at least 50% of period of cover available for the overseas trip
  4. Have a return ticket before leaving Australia
  5. Aged under 81 when the other criteria is met

The eligibility criteria is a bit different for the ANZ complimentary domestic travel insurance.²

Cardholder Spouse or Dependent
  1. Pay for the return domestic flight ticket using the eligible card before leaving home OR spend $250 on prepaid travel costs using the eligible card and have a return domestic flight ticket before starting the journey
  1. Spouse or dependent of an eligible cardholder
  2. Pay for the return domestic flight ticket using the eligible card before leaving home OR spend $250 on prepaid travel costs using the eligible card and have a return domestic flight ticket before starting the journey
  3. Each spouse/dependent travels with the cardholder for at least 50% of period of cover available for the trip

How to access this insurance - is it automatic for ANZ credit card holders

Once you meet all of the eligibility criteria the complimentary insurance is automatic.² Copies of the coverage are available on the ANZ website and if you’d like to confirm your coverage you can call 1300 135 271 or check it online.

In the event of an epidemic or pandemic, such as Covid-19, you may still be covered if you are positively diagnosed as having the sickness and your claim comes under one of these sections.¹
